Gun Targets in New Carrollton, Maryland date back to the early 1800s. The first gun target was erected on a piece of land that is now known as the Parkland Memorial Site. At that time, there were no firearms permits or regulations in place, so anyone with access to a gun could shoot at any animal or person they saw. The site was occasionally used for hunting and target practice. The Gun Targets program began in 1954 as part of the National Firearms Act Amendments of 1934. New Carrollton is a census-designated place in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,674 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Ft. Meade, MD–VA Combined statistical area. The town was organized on May 12, 1792 by three citizens of Frederick County: James Vestal (president), Ebenezer Higgins (secretary) and John Nicholson ( treasurer). They named it for General George Washington who had just been victoryantly elected President of the United States that year. According to tradition, New Carrollton's first post office was called "Mint Hill". However this may be an error as there were no mints in Frederick or Prince George's Counties at that time. The first postmaster was John Nicholson who served from 1793 to 1802. In 1814 the name of the town changed to "New Carrollton" after Congressman Nicholas Nicholas Carleton became its first U.S. Senator from Maryland and also served as its first mayor from 1815 until his death in 1828. He erected a new courthouse which still stands today on Market Street near where he lived with his wife and two daughters before they moved into their own home in 1830 when he became a justice of the peace for Prince George's County and later Attorney General of Maryland under President Andrew Johnson In 1881 New Carrollton voted against secession from the United States but did not join Confederate forces during the American Civil War gentleman farmer Revd Samuel Morse donated land to build what would become Eastern State Penitentiary which opened in 1895 In 1933 New Carrollton voted overwhelmingly to become an incorporated city Limits within then neighboring Hyattsville Township with 3,466 votes against 454 ballots cast by township residents wanting nothing to do with it . In 1951 Mayor James Jaffe proposed annexing nearby Silver Spring as well but this proposal failed when Hyattsville withdrew its support

New Carrollton was founded in 1784 by James K. Polk and his family as a small farming community on the north bank of the Potomac River. The town quickly became an important cultural center due to its location upstream from Washington, D.C., and its close proximity to both the University of Maryland and Anne Arundel County lines. The town's growth continued into the 19th century, thanks in large part to its position as a key crossroads for trade between Baltimore and Washington. New Carrollton also became a center of education, with several prominent families owning or controlling local schools. In 1881, New Carrollton joined Montgomery County, becoming one of the most populous areas in Maryland. During the 20th century, though, New Carrollton Struggled to Keep Up With Baltimore And Its Rapid Expansion. Its population plummeted during World War II due to Hitlers Invasion Of Europe; however, it did experience some modest rebuilding afterward thanks to government investment and job creation in postwar years. Today, New Carrollton is still a vibrant community filled with excellent restaurants and shopping opportunities; it is also home to one of Maryland's largest concentration of Muslim residents.
New Carrollton was once a small farming community located in the now-defunct County of Prince George's. The area that is now New Carrollton was first settled by Germans in the late 18th century, and it became an agricultural center after the opening of the Potomac River in 1795. In 1871, President Ulysses S. Grant moved the U.S. Capitol from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C., and New Carrollton became one of several towns annexed into Washington Township. By 1914, New Carrollton had a population of 1,200 and boasted a school, post office, grocery store, livery stable and two churches—one Baptist and one Methodist—as well as a small number of homes. However, during World War I (1914-18), New Carrollton saw heavy fighting as part of the war effort; many residents were killed or wounded. After the war ended in 1918, new development began to take hold in New Carrollton; by 1925, it had reached its current size with over 100 homes and businesses. In 1938, Congress designated New Carrollton as an official city within Montgomery County; however, due to population growth and infrastructure needsffffff no annexation occurred until 1963 when Montgomery City annexed part of New Carrollton
