New Carrollton is a town in Prince Georges County, Maryland, United States. The population was 21,865 at the 2010 census. New Carrollton is considered to be part of the Washington-Baltimore- Loudoun metropolitan area. It is bordered by Bowie to the south and east, Fredericktown to the north, and Takoma Park to the west. The town was founded in 1792 as a small fishing village on an island in Loch Raven Lake located about four miles (6 km) from where Baltimore now stands. In 1828, New Carrollton became a county seat of Prince George's County. The courthouse stood on Market Street until it burned down in 1916; replacement buildings were built on State Road 7 near today's American Legion Post 910. In 1892, voters elected George Washington Dixon as their first mayor; he served until his death in 1893. Dixon's widow established the Dixon Foundation which donated land for what is now campus of Towson University and named it after her husband. In 1895, two separate but related fire outbreaks destroyed several businesses and houses in downtown New Carrollton; only one building was rebuilt. One result of these fires was that city streets were renamed "Dixon Boulevard" in tribute to Dixon's contributions to the community during its early years. This outbreak also helped spur development around Falls Church Avenue – then a rural agricultural area – into an thriving commercial district that still exists today and has been called "America's Second City". In 1899–1900, new churches and school buildings were erected along Falls Church Avenue; this district came to be known as "New Carrollton Heights". A group of prominent citizens purchased 340 acres (156 ha) northeast of town for $2 million dollars in 1912 and named it "New Carrollton Park." This area offers excellent views of downtown Baltimore from many homes throughout its nine blocks long avenues which are bisected by rolling green hills covered with large trees or well-manicured gardens - making it one of most popular neighborhoods within walking distance of downtown Baltimore! During World War II over 2 million pieces of munitions were produced at nearby Munitions Factory No 1 – 5 times more than had been produced at any other U .S . industrial site before or during that war alone! The munition production stopped abruptly just shy of Pearl Harbor when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor without warning us – leaving our plant unharmed! Today there are still remnants remaining from that period including two large turrets used as guard towers aroundFactory No 1
