The city was founded in 1827 as a small settlement by colonists from Virginia who had been driven out of their previous home, Alexandria, Va. James Krieger as "the most important political center in western Prince George's County." His rationale for doing so was that new immigrants coming into America were often afraid to travel further west than Baltimore because of fears that they might be deported back to their native countries if they were caught entering without proper documentation or if they had any negative associations with those from Canada (e.g., gangsters or criminals). New Carrollton residents objected vehemently to this plan and planned an boycott of JFK's inauguration ceremonies in Washington D.C.—one of many protests against American policies during his presidency.) This endeavor should bring about 50 new jobs directly related[ly], helping support thousands more indirect[ly], through commerce .
