In 1865, the New Carrollton Rifle Association was formed and began hosting matches at an old mill. This event led to the addition of a range to town's square. In 1869, gun sight manufacturers from all over Baltimore came toNew Carrollton for trade shows and meetings. This event also served as a call for new members to become involved in the association. In 1875, pistolsmiths opened up shop in town and began adding pistolsights to their inventory. By 1880, there were fivegun shops operating in New Carrollton with more than 130 employees! In 1886, local residents petitioned for a City Charter that would allow them incorporation as a city! After much discussion, it was decided that incorporation would not take place because of lack of support from both political leaders and citizens! In 1896-1897, local merchants organized “The Open Market” event which featured live music and refreshments on Saturday mornings throughout downtown New Carrollton. This event helped promote economic development within the city by providing an opportunity for shoppers to meet different businesses and buy goods they wouldn't find at home or at the market adjacent properties. On July 4th 1897, three gunmen killed twenty-six people at what is now known as Independence Hall before escaping into hiding! This event has been cited as one of America's deadliest terrorist attacks!
New Carrollton is a town in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. New Carrollton is located just east of the Washington-National Capital Park boundary and south of the District of Columbia. The town was founded by Nicholas Murray Butler in 1871 as a tiny farming community on land that he purchased from the Labourers' Compensation Fund. Butler renamed it New Carrollton after himself and his wife Caroline Clarke emigrated to America from England in 1868. At its peak, New Carrollton had a population of only 150 people; however, over time its growth stalled and by 2000 it had shrunk to 8,000 residents. Today, much of what once made up New Carrollton has been replaced by high-density development within walking or biking distance of most businesses and services. Despite its small size (by American standards), New Carrollton has played an important role in both local and national politics over the years. It is home to both the headquarters for the Democratic National Committee (since 1996) as well as two members of Congress: Elijah Cummings (D-MD) and John Sarbanes (D-MD). also one member of The United States Senate representing Maryland's 6th District which includes partsofNewCarrollTON

New Carrollton was founded in 1792 by General John Smith as a small farming community on the Potomac River. By 1814, it had become the capital of what is now Maryland. The town grew rapidly during the antebellum period, with large plantations and dwellings being built along the river and its surrounding area. During the Civil War, New Carrollton became a center of resistance to Union occupation. After the war, it experienced rapid growth as an agricultural and commercial center, thanks in part to its location at the mouth of the Patapsco River. In 1916, New Carrollton became an incorporated city under state law. It has since undergone many changes, including becoming one of Baltimore's most diverse communities with a wide variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. Today, New Carrollton is home to a number of major cultural attractions such as The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Dentistry; Oriole Park At Camden Yards; and John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum.
