New Carrollton was founded in 1783 by Captain John Smith and many of its early residents were Quakers. Today, New Carrollton is known for its high-quality public education system and its wide variety of businesses and cultural attractions. New Carrollton has been called "the most ethnically diverse city in America" because it contains people from around the world who have come to live here. There are more than 26 different nationalities represented in New Carrollton's population, as well as more than 20 language groups. Many of these people have made their homes here through affirmative action programs that provide opportunities for minorities such as Hispanic and African American individuals to receive good educations and work in white-collar jobs. The town also has a rich history dating back to its founding as a trading post on the Patuxent River. In 1814, Colonel Nathaniel Nichols donated land to make way for what would become New Carrollton Heights Cemetery today. The first courthouse in New Carrollton opened in 1824; it was replaced by the present courthouse in 1892 after arson destroyed several buildings within the town limits that year. In 1916 New Carrollton was renamed for President Woodrow Wilson following his visit there. The city experienced significant growth during World War II with the construction of military facilities such as Fort Meade and Camp Custody. During the 1960s and 1970s, New Carrollton experienced several waves of immigration which has influenced its culture and demographics. These waves included Italian Americans who arrived during World War II; East AsianAmericans who came during the Korean War; Hispanic Americans who arrived during Hurricane Katrina; African Americans who moved from Baltimore City after riots protesting civil rights abuses there; etc.; all of which have had an impact on both society and the economy. Today, New Carrollton is home to over 100K people – more than any other municipality in Maryland – making it one of the most populous cities in America. Its economy is dominated by professional/managerial positions (such as management consulting firms), research institutions (including Johns Hopkins University), blue-collar jobs (such as manufacturing), services (including health care) and retail sales outletsSuch diversity has led to tensions among different neighborhoods: some residents feel that they have not been given their fair share of resources while others complain about crime rates or lack thereof. However, despite these challenges,New Carrollton has managed to maintain strong civic relations throughout its history while becoming one of America’s most diverse communities

New Carrollton grew rapidly due to its location, but it was destroyed by a fire in 1876. It was rebuilt and renamed after General Robert E. Lee, who helped lead the Confederate army during the American Civil War. New Carrollton became an important community during the 1980s when it became home to The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and later The Maryland Institute College of Art.
