The history of gun magazines in New Carrollton, Maryland dates back to 1859. That year, the town of New Carrollton was founded by General James H. Carleton and his wife, Martha Washington Carleton. The carpenter turned entrepreneur had purchased land east of the Anacostia River and began construction on what would become the first commercial building in the town. One of Carleton's primary goals was to provide a place where people could gather to shoot shotguns and rifles. In 1859, he also erected a small cabin near present-day Georgetown for storage and use as a shooting range. In 1875, when New Carrollton became an incorporated city, it passed an ordinance establishing municipal police departments. The department's first commander was Captain John A. Gamble who served until his death in 1904. During that time, city officials decided to arm their officers with handguns instead of rifles because they felt that handguns were more effective weapons against criminals than rifles. In 1912, Mayor Augustus Fenton ordered the construction of a new City Hall which would house the borough's two police stations as well as a courtroom and library for the citizens of New Carrollton. At that time, handguns were still not prevalent among city officials so they ordered firearms manufacturer Colt Firearms to produce just one handgun per officer for patrol purposes only; this order was rescinded after complaints from residents about high crime rates following World War I.[1] Gun magazines continued to be popular among law enforcement officers throughout America during World War II due to their ability to store multiple rounds within easy reach should an officer need them while on duty or while waiting for backup (among other reasons). Gun magazines also played an important role during riots and protests following the American Civil Rights Movement in 1968-1969 because law enforcement officers could quickly bring ammo up series into use if needed (especially during street demonstrations).[2] After America’s victory in World War II ended in 1945, gun magazine manufacturing resumed thanks largely to ATF’s importation program which allowed firearm manufacturers access to surplus ammunition seized during wartime.[3] As part of this programmatic initiative dubbed Operation Paperclip,[4], ATF seized many guns from Nazi Germany but also purchased thousands of rounds of ammunition for its own firearms industry by purchasing surplus stocks from several major suppliers including Winchester Ammunition and Remington Arms Company[5]. This operation marked perhaps the most comprehensive arms procurement program ever undertaken by ATF[6] – providing 2 million rounds total over six months – making it one of its largest acquisitions ever at that time[7]. It should be noted that although many existing gun magazines were destroyed or converted into paperweights following these raids,[8] some remained operational until around 2006 when all traces thereof were removed from public records.[9]

There are also several smaller museums within New Carrollton itself including: Hagerstown History Museum (founded 1905), Dunbar-Smyth Village (founded 1907), Carpenter Park (established 1912), Potters Pavilion (established 1916) and John Fenton House (established 1928). As one of only two towns remaining on both sides of Route 1A between Washington D.C., Howard University's College Park campus and Baltimore Harbor, New Carrollton has become known for its vibrant cultural scene - hosting events such as literary readings, music festivals and art shows year-round. Some notable landmarks within town include Masonic Temple #1 (built 1872), Friendship Baptist Church #2 (1898), American Legion Hall #3A (1910) and Old Courthouse Annex Building #2B (1914).
