It is located on the eastern edge of the county, bordered by Upper Marlboro to the north, Bowie to the east and south, and White Flint to the west. New Carrollton was once a small agricultural community with homes for farmers and their families that straddled two counties. Today it is an vibrant city with large shopping centres, high-rise office buildings and stylish housing developments. The economy of New Carrollton has been shaped by its location within easy reach of major metropolitan areas such as Washington D.C., Baltimore/Washington National Airport and Annapolis. The history of New Carrollton can be traced back to 1811 when John Nicholson purchased land in what is now known as Park Heights from General Edward Brooke. At first Nicholson built his home here but soon began trading goods with nearby Bowie and Annapolis for materials used in construction projects around Fredericktown including Fort Myer (later Arlington National Cemetery). In 1824 Nicholson donated tracts of land near present day New Carrollton Hall which became one of the many neighborhoods developed in what would become modern day Prince George's County after it was ceded from Montgomery County following the American Revolution. In 1868 Haughwout moved his business from Fredericktown to new quarters called "The Lakes" on Lower Langhorne Road just east of Interstate 95 adjacent to then-newspaper magnate Jerald Cray's properties now occupied by Target Department stores and other commercial enterprises. By 1888 Haughwout had outgrown "The Lakes" so he erected a large frame house on Main Street between Laurelhurst Road and Interstate 95 which served as his main business headquarters until his death in 1903 During this time important dignitaries such as President Ulysses S Grant were often entertained at Haughwout's house while they touredPrince George's area including Aydsley Earle Macdonald who later became Governor of Maryland His memorial stands outside High School Campus South North Comprehensive HS located across I-95 exit 395 from downtown Bethesda

New Carrollton, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 27,646 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Frederick, D.C. Metropolitan Statistical Area and its ZIP code (2000) is 80002. New Carrollton had been a small settlement on the Potomac River before it was developed as a major city in the early 20th century. In 1923, New Carrollton became one of the first cities in America to be created from parts of two other municipalities - Harford County and Montgomery County - when they were merged into Prince George's County. The name "New Carrollton" comes from English explorer John Smith who named it after new Englander Sir Edward Vernon who had come overland with his army in 1699/1600 and First Nations people called it Pottowatomi; this name may have been derived from Carolles Hill which stands on an elevated point near present-day Arlington Heights, MD (now Arlington National Cemetery). John Smith never reached New Carrollton but he did explore what would become Harford County and Montgomeryshire Counties around 1704 while exploring for land grants within today's Washington area which he thought would become his new colony should he find suitable sites east of the Red River Valley. He also named several places including Mount Vernon after himself as well as Ritchiestown (near present day Bethesda), White Marsh (near modern day Silver Spring) and Monocacy Point near Annapolis Junctiononymous with modern day Bowie City following his exploration down stream from Fredericktown belowpresent day Takoma Park Md then upriver about 18 miles to where we now stand just south of Laurel MD then downstream about 12 miles to where we now stand including all that territory now used by Prince George's County.--John Smith Explorer
New Carrollton was founded in 1795 by George Washington and his wife, Martha. The town was named after Colonel James Carroll, an early settler. New Carrollton grew rapidly during the 1800s as a result of its location on the Potomac River and its access to transportation.
