New Carrollton is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 12,202 at the 2010 census. New Carrollton is located on the eastern edge of Montgomery County and is bordered by Bowie to the north and east, Takoma Park to the south, Rockville Centre to the west and Gaithersburg to the northwest. The first settler in what is now New Carrollton was Nicholas Mynster who came from England in 1684. He built a small cabin on land that he purchased from Lord Baltimore for £100. Mynster laid out a plat of what would become New Carrollton on November 3, 1786. At that time it consisted of only two streets and one house. In 1812 General James Hays ordered all Native Americans living east of Baltimore must leave or be forcibly removed by March 1st unless they possessed "a just claim" to their lands. Many were forced into exile including Nicholas Mynster who returned home after being pardoned by President James Knoppers in 1814. Pardon or not, many natives died as a result of exposure during this period which also saw many engagements between Native American scouts and white troops throughout Prince George's County including at White Marsh where over 100 Indians were killed in 1794 alone according to some historians A group of men led by Major John Nicholson bought 5 acres (2 hectares) northeast of present-day New Carrollton for $5 in 1800 from Nicholas Mynster’s widow Martha MynsterNicholson known then as Nicholas [Mynster] & his brother Samuel [Myndersons]. This lot became known as Nicholson’s Necklace because until about 1830 no person had actually lived there permanently other than picking up supplies occasionally for themselves and their families before moving on again . It should be noted that these early settlers did not erect permanent homes but rather made use of whatever space they could find while living off the land given up by previous owners/ occupants etc.. After purchase Nicholson changed his name to Nicholson & Son because he wanted people hereto know him better (and likely lessened competition among himself and others seeking property). On December 2nd 1800 Nathaniel Norris acquired 1 acre (0 hectare) southeast corner lot #1b across from current day intersection of Druid Road & US 301 near Mount Vernon Cemetery - an area later renamed Laurel Highlands – from wife Abigail Norris with title conveyed under marriage contract dated December 7th 1800 between herself & Captain John Nichols . They named their property Laurel Heights due to its elevated location above creek flowing through it providing privacy for their family estate... Upon purchasing this property Capt Nichols laid out streets parallel grid lines leading NW towards Bethesda Mifflin Street then turning easterly towards Laurel Hills terminate at North Branch Potomac River . As part as Capt Nichols Streets new home was built facing Northeast toward Potomac River - still visible today adjacent icons along North Branch Potomac River Walkway
