In the early 1800s, New Carrollton was a small town in central Maryland. It was home to a large gunsmithing and firearms industry. The law forbade handgun ownership by civilians without a license from the state government. The first settlers built log cabins which still stand today on Bushy Branch Road between US 11th Street and Old York Road. They did this because they had no other choice but to live near the then booming port town of Baltimore which was growing rapidly due to its location at Chesapeake Bay. During the Revolutionary War, many Loyalist soldiers living in New Carrollton sided with British forces over those fighting for independence. After war ended, most Loyalists moved away from New Carrolton although a few thousand remain today as descendants of those original colonists

In 1927, New Carrollton merged with neighboring jurisdictions of Bowie and Greenbelt to form the new City of Bowie Heights which continue to thrive today as one of Prince George’s County’s largest cities with a total population over 15,000 residents! Today, much like in historical past – New Carrollton is a thriving community that continues to make a positive impact on its surroundings!

It gradually became a large town, with a population of 10,000 in 1815. New Carrollton was incorporated as a municipality in 1867. The town developed into an important center of commerce and industry, but during the 20th century it lost its importance to nearby Rockville and Bethesda. In recent years, New Carrollton has become an increasingly residential community, with many new homes being built near the river and downtown.
