New Carrollton is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 21,817 at the 2010 census. New Carrollton is located on the eastern edge of Montgomery County. It is bordered by Washington Township to the south, Bethesda Township to the west, Upper Marlboro to the north and east, and Rockville Centre to the northeast. The name "New Carrollton" was given to what is now part of downtown by General Robert E. Lee during his 1864 campaign for president as a tribute to then-newly founded Baltimore City. It became an incorporated village in 1881 and ZIP code 21902 was created in 1911 when it merged with other nearby villages including Indian Head Park and Greenbelt. The area around present-day New Carrollton was first settled by Europeans in 1676 when John Smith discovered land that contained baskets of tobacco which he called "Carroll's Land." By 1790 most of present-day Prince George's County had been acquired by the British Crown as part of North America under Treaty 7. In 1795 James Bowie established a mill on Georgetown Creek just outside modern day New Carrollton while Captain John Smith explored much of western Maryland looking for new land for settlement. In 1800 David Reimer purchased 6 acres (2 ha) near today's intersection of US 301/ Route 3 & Old Georgetown Rd., where he erected a small cabin and began cultivating corn, beans and squash until 1803 when he sold his holdings to Colonel Nicholas Towle who built Towle House on what are now College Ave./Route 1A about two miles east from where Reimer lived. After Colonel Towle died in 1810 his widow Mary Ann built The Mount Carmelite convent from parts of her husband's holdings near today's intersection of both Routes 301/Route 3 & Old Georgetown Rd., becoming one of many religious institutions sponsored by Sir Walter Scott within short distance north along I-495 between Bethesda & Silver Spring counties; Scotchman Farms being adjacent northwest corner lot also used as convent garden (& still visible). New Carrollton is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 25,811 at the 2010 census. New Carrollton is known for its historic district and for its large number of small businesses and restaurants. The first settlers in what is now New Carrollton were Presbyterian missionaries who came to Maryland from Scotland in 1798. They founded what became the city of Annapolis on an area that had been part of Frederick County since 1689. The city grew rapidly as more settlers arrived, and by 1814 it had become a full-fledged municipality with a seat on the state capital's grounds. In 1838, parts of present-day Prince George's and Anne Arundel counties were detached from Frederick County to form their own government; New Carrollton remained within that new county until 1861 when it became part of Prince George's again. In 1871, after years of tension over property lines among several breweries operating in central Prince Georges County (then including much of today's Bethesda), the General Assembly passed Act No. 544 which created Montgomery County as a separate entity - effectively splitting Baltimore into two cities where one could only be built if developers agreed to pay an annual tribute to the other - essentially giving Montgomery County jurisdiction over everything east of US 1 (including most of northeastern Washington). With no real townsfolk left in eastern Montgomery County beyond Baltimore City proper and Upper Marlboro Township (which straddles both sides of I-95), agriculturalists turned to farming methods pioneered by English farmers living along the Potomac River for centuries: raising corn, wheat, peas, tobacco and other crops on large scale using hogsheads or bales - leaving behind evidence throughout this region dating back to Prehistoric times: long barks between fields used as cover while workers harvested
New Carrollton was founded in 1795 by Captain John Smith as a trading post on the Patuxent River. The town grew rapidly due to its location and trade advantages. In 1810, New Carrollton became the capital of Maryland. It was an important stop on the Great American Road, and served as a center for education and business. The town declined in the 19th century, but has since regained some of its former prominence as a commercial and cultural district.
