New Carrollton was a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States, located on the Potomac River. The town was founded by colonists who had come from England in 1676. It became an independent municipality in 1871 and was incorporated as a city on November 3, 1917. New Carrollton is located at 38°21′N 76°09′W (38.8392, -76.1469). The town began as a farming community on the other side of the river from where Washington's Mount Vernon Barracks now stand. Natives of what is now New Carrollton remember large gatherings of people there to discuss important matters during their annual hunting and fishing trips upstream from the town site. On December 1, 1788 an act of Congress created Prince George's County; New Carrollton thus became part of Prince George's County for all purposes except for its representation in the state Senate which it retained until 1863 when it became a part of Baltimore County. In addition to its agricultural production, early New Carrollton supported small businesses and families with their home-based manufacturing operations that still survive today such as Singer Sewing Machine Company and Bethlehem Steel Corporation. In 1916 local citizens raised money to build one mile (1 km) of new street grid patterned after that used by Philadelphia’s then Mayor John Fenton who had been mayor since 1915 when Prince George’s County was created out of parts of Baltimore County including present day Anne Arundel and Montgomery Counties. This gave rise to one famous saying about New Carrolton: “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!” In recent years much effort has been made to restore portions of downtown streetscape including restoration work done on Market Street between East Main Street and West Second Street which fronts College Park University; improvements have also been made along Mifflin Avenue between Third Street (now York Road) and Fourth Street NW which runs parallel to Interstate 270 just east of Interstate 395/Upper Marlboro Expressway where some excellent restaurants are found; this revitalization project has brought back many longtime residents who were displaced by development projects elsewhere in the cityscape over the last several decades or so
The town of Carrollton was founded in 1792 by James Carroll and his wife Mary. The first settlers were farmers, but later the town became a manufacturing center for goods such as cloth, shoes, and jewelry. In 1879, the town was renamed New Carrollton after President George Washington's birthplace in Virginia. The population of New Carrollton grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its manufacturing and trade base, with many new businesses being built in the town over time. By 1925, New Carrollton had a population of over 100,000 people. In recent years, however, New Carrollton has been losing its economic significance due to changes in the local economy.
