Laurel is a city in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 21,844 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the five municipalities in Prince George's County and is located on the southern border of Washington County. The area that now makes up Laurel was first settled by Europeans in 1665 as part of Charles Calvert's Colony of Maryland. By 1798, most of what is now Laurel had been developed as a town by settlers from Virginia and Pennsylvania who bought land east of Baltimore. During the American Revolution, many residents served in the Patriot army including General John Fitzpatrick and Lieutenant Colonel James Ross; later, most residents became Loyalists. Laurel was incorporated as a town on December 5, 1801 by order of Governor William Mifflin. On March 7, 1814 an act to incorporate all seven towns in Prince George's County was passed with unanimous vote and it became an unincorporated community with a population of about 500 people. In 1830 part of Laurel Township (now Falls Church) was annexed into Fairfax County while other areas were annexed into Loudoun County during this time period including much of what is now Arlington Heights and Bethesda. During the 1960s through 1970s there was heavy development near Interstate 95 which led to increased use of pesticides which caused birth defects among children living nearby - some stillbirths were even reported until 1984 when scientists found no link between pesticides and birth defects

On February 16th, 1790, President George Washington signed legislation classifying Laurel as a "township". The first town meeting was held on May 5th and it voted to name itself "Laurel." A public house called the Mount Vernon Theater opened its doors in 1802 which led to increased development around this time including several stores and two hotels. In 1824, Mayor James Fenton established a water works system that provided drinking water for all of Prince Georges County as well as providing trash removal services for residents. This project was completed in 1827 and helped spur growth around town which continued until 1955 when all but one of these businesses closed down due to economic reasons alone or because they couldn't compete against larger neighboring cities such as Baltimore or Washington D.C.. The last major business closure took place in 1978 when Sears filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization and ceased operations within three months after closing more than 2200 stores nationwide including 350 in Maryland alone... In honor of our fallen soldiers who have laid down their lives defending our freedoms we will operate Memorial Day Service today from 9AM-1PM at Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church located just east off I-95 North near US 301/Upper Mifflin Road... After years of decline we are seeing some resurgence with new businesses opening up such as Bakerella’s Bakery & Cafe (opened October 10th) which specializes in breakfast sandwiches; Hopkins BBQ (opened November 15th) which serves up delicious pork dishes; local antique store owners Second Hand Antiques & Collectibles reopened after being closed for nearly 20 years; Cutty Sark’s Pub has been open since early summer serving up fantastic drinks and good food along with live music every night starting at 7pm... With so many new businesses coming online it can be hard to determine where things stand historically speaking but through careful research we have managed to compile a list of five buildings that are important landmarks within our community: 1) Stonington Presbyterian Episcopal Church - built c 1865 2) Mount Vernon Free Library - built 1922 3) Old Post Office - built 1861 4) Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church - built c 1865 5) Cutty Sark’s Pub - opened late summer 2006
In 1827, Laurel was incorporated as a town by an act of the Maryland General Assembly. The population of Laurel at that time was only about 100 people. By 1830, the population had increased to around 350 people and by 1835, it had reached 600 people. In 1847, Laurel became a borough and in 1861, it became a city.
