Laurel, Maryland is a town in northern Montgomery County, Maryland. As of the 2010 census, the population was 26,711. The name of the town comes from a stream called "Laurel" which runs through it. The first people to settle in what is now Laurel were farmers who came overland from Pennsylvania during the early 17th century. They built their homes on high ground that overlooks the Monocacy River and also grew crops and raised livestock. By 1800, many local families had joined forces to form a company that became known as The Laurel Company. This group of pioneers developed land around present-day Laurel and built log cabins for themselves and their families. Over time, more people arrived in what is now Laurel - some coming overlanders while others coming by boat or train from nearby Philadelphia. By 1821, much of what is now Montgomery County had been organized as part of Prince George's County and new settlers began arriving there too. Some of these newcomers decided to move into areas that already had some settler communities; among them were those who founded Bethesda (now part of Washington D.C.) In 1825, they formed another company named The Mountaineers to purchase land along the Monocacy River east of present-day Laurel.. In 1828, two brothers by the name of Macdonald bought 640 acres (246 hectares) southeast of present-day Laurel along White Marsh Creek with plans to build a millrace powered by water drawn from the creek. When construction proceeded too fast on this project - taking advantage of cheap labor sourced from adjacent farms - Macdonald got into trouble with his neighbors and was forced sell his land back to them for just $2 per acre! However, this experience taught him something about hard work: he later resumed construction on his millrace project but managed to complete it within budget). As mills became more common throughout America during this period, so too did mills in Laurel; one such mill was started by David Waddell in 1830 and continued production until 1852 when it burned down due to an arsonist’s attack! Later still, other businesses cropped up around central business district: grocery stores popped up near downtown while factories erected large blocks next door – all within easy walking distance for workers commuting into Baltimore City or points northward… at least until World War II when things changed dramatically because key industries relocated away from central Baltimore altogether due thento increased air travel! Today many residents commute into Centreville via I-495 or Interstate 270; both routes offer excellent views out towards Towson University’s campus and Catonsville mall across Route 40A (the main north–south route passing through town). In 1897, Laurels incorporation as a city made it the seventh largest city in Maryland. It remained an important commercial and social center into the 21st century.
