Laurel is an important city in Maryland, and its history reflects that. The city is bordered by Washington County to the south, Anne Arundel County to the west, and Montgomery County to the north. It was first settled in 1749 by refugees from Baltimore. In 1821, it became a state capital. The first optical instrument ever made in Laurel was a pair of microscopes used by Dr. Samuel Morse and Dr. Alfred Vail at the Pratt Institute in 1826. The instruments were very successful and were used for many research projects during their time at Pratt. By 1830, two years afterestablishment of the American Museum of Natural Sciences in New York City, three institutions had followed suit: the Smithsonian Institution (founded 1865), United States Naval Observatory (1872), and American Philosophical Society (1873). In 1884, President James Kapp assigned Julius Caesar Levy as commissioner of public works in order to improve transportation infrastructure within Laurel County because of growing streetcar traffic throughout Maryland due to industry growth in downtown Baltimore including new mills being built on Light Street near Washington Market Place; this led to development around Springdale Road between Park Avenue and Druid Hill as well as east-west streetscape improvements on Springdale Road called “the Roman Roads” which still exist today with parking garage entrances on either side facing Springdale Road near US 1/US 35 interchange Plaza West retail area - these developments are now part of downtown Laurel business district known as Old Town Heritage District

In 1908, Rufus Waddell took over management of the company from Marsh and continued to grow it significantly until his death in 1942. Under Waddell's guidance, the company became one of the most successful optical companies in the country and reached its peak sales years during World War II when it produced tens of thousands of spectacles for military purposes. After war ended however, profits fell dramatically which led to Waddell's retirement in 1951 but not before leaving behind a legacy that continues today – providing high-quality optical products at an affordable price point to consumers all over America
