Laurel, Maryland is a town in Cecil County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It has been part of the Baltimore–Washington Metropolitan Area since its incorporation as a borough in 1885. Laurel is located on the eastern bank of the Patuxent River and owes much of its name to General John Laurel who served in the American Revolutionary War and later founded this community. The first European settlers were two families from England who arrived in 1681. They named their new land "Laurel." The next year, Captain John Smith discovered along the riverbank an area that would eventually become Laurel Heights and claimed it for England. In 1749, Samuel Ogle donated land to establish what would become downtown Baltimore; however, due to Native American attacks that continued intermittently until 1774, most development took place on the west bank of the Patuxent River where General John Laurel had built his home by then. In 1885, when Baltimore became an independent city, Frederick Beal decided to incorporate his farming village into larger city limits. Beal's idea was based on Philadelphia's decision to annex smaller towns within its borders in order to increase property values and promote growth; but unlike Philadelphia where annexation involved unanimous vote by all residents interested in being annexed (as opposed to individual votes), Baltimore's incorporation process allowed for dissenting voices fromwithin the boroughs - including representatives from Dearborn Heights and South End - to object to certain aspects of City Hall's proposed boundaries which they believed did not benefit their neighborhoods sufficiently. This led to Beaver's proposal for annexation of Laurel which received polite but firm rejection from Mayor Oscar Sargent because he felt that it would erode Beverly Hills' dominance as aonsequentiality-wise withinBaltimore without also benefiting South End or Dearborn Heights much yet concurrently adding significant numbers of residentially diverse people who hitherto had only resided within east side neighbourhoods with no say in how their communities were developed (the so-called "new middle class"). By 1939 however, due to World War II and rifle production at Fort Monmouth Naval base which increased demand for military supplies throughout Maryland, support for industry within Laurel diminished and by 1945 it had fallen behind Baltimore again though it continued to be an important regional center until its decline following the oil embargo of 1973-1975
