Laurel, Maryland is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. It is located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and about 15 miles (24 km) north of Washington D.C. Laurel was founded in 1795 by Captain John Smith and his family as a trading post on the Susquehanna River. The original settler's homes were built near present-day Greenbelt and Laurel Roads. In 1812, President James K. Polk moved the U.S. Military Academy from West Point to nearby Annapolis because of its strategic location on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge connecting Baltimore and Washington D.C., making it an important military hub during the American Civil War era. The city annexed portions of lands adjacent to Laurel in 1916 and 1922, bringing its population to over 100,000 people today. The city was again renamed Laurel in 1938 after General Hugh Jealousy delivered a speech there commemorating Marylanders who had served in World War II throughout all theaters of war including Normandy, Italy, Europe and Asia Pacific Theater of Operations; these soldiers had given their lives for our country at home or abroad (see also "Hugh Jealousy" article). Many residents still refer to themselves as "Laurels" even though they now reside outside the city limits
Laurel was first settled by the Algonquian people in the late eighteenth century. The town was established in 1795 when General John Taylor founded a post office here. In 1847, Laurel became part of Prince George's County and was incorporated as a town on February 4, 1850. The population of Laurel peaked at over 10,000 in 1920 but declined to 7,500 by 1930. After World War II, the population increased rapidly due to migration from rural Maryland into the city. However, the growth of Baltimore and other suburbs led to a decrease in population totals until 1990 when Laurel reached its current size.
