Laurel is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. It is located on the eastern bank of the Patuxent River. The population was 20,551 at the 2010 census. The first European to set foot in what is now Laurel was Captain John Smith in 1608. A small settlement developed around the mill built by Nicholas Despard and his brother-in-law, Francis Westphal. William Penn granted land to James Oglethorpe for a mill on the Patuxent River in 1751; this tract became known as "Ogilvie." John Lewis made his home here in 1805 and served as Mayor from 1807 until his death two years later. In 1820, he donated to the town an old plantation house which has been used as both a public library and municipal building ever since. In 1793, John Templeton founded Washingtons College here after receiving an anonymous donation of $5,000 from Major General Sir Edmund Randolph (later Ulysses S. Grant). The college remains one of America's leading educational institutions today with more than 100 undergraduate programs and several graduate divisions. After being burned down by Indians in 1777 during the American Revolution, Laurel was rebuilt following plans provided by Surveyor General Thomas Paine under British auspices—the same year that Washington State became a part of America. However, much of these early improvements were destroyed when fire broke out at Paine's headquarters near present-day Mount Vernon on October 14th of that year - an event later commemorated annually with a day off for all citizens of Washington D.C.. The reestablishment of government services followed soon thereafter but little progress was made towards improving infrastructure or developing commerce or industry until around 1840 when heavy investment began to result in increased trade opportunities and job growth within Laurel itself as well as throughout Prince George's County...During this time period local mills continued to be established while new roads were built connecting different parts of town thereby facilitating economic development... Although most businesses closed during prohibition efforts which led to high unemployment rates among Native Americans due largely to their lack of accessiste firearms,... some businesses did manage to open up during this time including JONES' BREAD Factory which operated continuously until 1933 despite Prohibition laws prohibiting importation/export thereof."
Laurel, Maryland was first settled in 1749 by John Lewis. The town was named for a Laurel tree that grew near the original site of the settlement. The first house in Laurel was built by Captain Jonathan Williams in 1751. In 1770, Colonel Thomas Telford organized the county of Prince George's and founded Laurel as its capital. In 1801, President James K. Polk ordered General Winfield Scott to march on Washington to end the War of 1812. As a result, many trees were cut down to make way for the military parade ground that is now known as Constitution Avenue.
