The area that now includes Laurel was first opened up for settlement by English settlers in 1718. By 1820, the town had grown large enough that it needed its own courthouse and jail. The first guns ever made in Laurel were pistols made by Nicholas-Jacques Demers and his son Nicolas-Jacques Demers II. These pistols were designed aspocket handguns for common folk who could not afford more expensive rifles or pistols. In 1853, Samuel Colt began making revolvers in West Hartford, Connecticut. This new production method allowed Colt to produce high-quality firearms at low cost without having to worry about quality control or manufacturing restrictions set by other companies. By 1865, Colt had produced over 100 million revolvers throughout the world—the largest number of any company in history! In 1924, Smith & Wesson became one of the original incorporations within United States Steel Corporation (USSC). USSC would become one of the leading producers of firearms worldwide after World War II! Today, gun grips continue to play an important role in American firearm culture and tradition! Gun grips, or grip handles, are devices used to keep a firearm in the hand during shooting. The most common types of grip handle are those with a thumb groove and ridges on both sides of the handle. Grip handles can also be Crocodile-Collar style grips. The first guns were made with two hands, so it was necessary to have some way to hold them so that one could fire while the other held the gun. One way was to put an arm around the gun barrel and use one hand to grip onto either side of the barrel, just like you would do with a steering wheel or a rocker switch. This technique was called cocking the gun by holding onto one end and rotating it until it came back into line with your shoulder. It should be noted that this method was not very accurate because you couldn't see where your hand was going when you turned it and you had to rely on feel rather than sight. Another way of holding a gun became popular after cannons were developed that fired shot from multiple barrels at once (called universal firearms). Laurel is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 10,379 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Frederick, DC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of Laurel comes from 9th century war-time British settlers who named it "Lauderdale". The name was anglicized to Laurel in 1755 by John Smith. In 1814, James Hinton bought land in what is now Laurel and built a small log cabin there as his home. In 1828, Thomas Jefferies founded the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad here and began construction of a line between Baltimore and Frederick (now Washington). When the railroad reached Laurel on November 12, 1830, it marked the end of an era for this town because railroads had not previously penetrated far into Prince Georges County. A store and post office were established here in 1831; however they did not continue operation until after the incorporation of nearby jurisdictions which includedpresent-day Takoma Park and Hyattsville. A mill was built on Church Creek near present-day Georgetown in 1833 by Jethro Stevens; it became known as "Jefferies Mill". In 1840s local farmers developed a cash crop that would become known as apples: wild Apples of America were brought overland to Laurel from Virginia by wagonloads every fall. By 1860 about one-third of all produce grown in Prince George's County came from Apple orchard operations; today only about 1%of all produce grown in Maryland comes from apple production. The arrival of steamboats led to increased transportation needs for goods coming into this area so that mills could be built along Church Creek capable of turning out lumber products such as plankboard and cabinet doors; brick buildings replaced pioneer cabins beginning around 1860 when larger mills became available with room for more workers inside than outside buildings allowed before. During this time many residents moved away seeking opportunities elsewhere but some remain long past retirement age living off their farmlands still using traditional methods like splitting logs while sitting on their porch enjoying views while chatting with friends on Saturday morning hours ago
