It was eventually replaced by the musket, and it finally became a popular weapon for hunting deer and other animals. Laurel is a small town in St. Mary's County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 5,912. It is the home of Laurel High School and the nearby Laurel Renaissance Academy, both public school districts. The town was founded in 1819 by Capt. John Smith who named it for himself and his wife Nancelyn (née Christiansen). The first post office was established in 1827 and was called "Newbury". The first settler in Laurel was James Waddell who built a cabin on the Branch Potomac River in 1829. In 1830, John Marshall moved from Virginia to establish what would become Laurel with land he bought from Waddell. In 1835, Isaac Vogel settled in Laurel after coming overland from Easton. Vogel became one of the largest landowners in Maryland at that time. In 1850, Nathaniel Wilburn purchased 100 acres (40 hectares) east of present-day Laurel from Vogel for $250 cash and erected a log cabin known as "Wilburn's Cabin". He and his wife Fanny raised seven children there before moving to their farmstead at Poquoson Corner around 1860 where they raised two more children before divorcing around 1870. Nathaniel Wilburn passed away circa 1880 while living near Good Hope Camp on Beaverdam Creek outside present-day Bethesda; his widow continued to live there until her death some years later A few years after Mr. Wilburn's death Fanny married again and this time produced six children but all died young within five years due to diphtheria or tuberculosis which then spread to other families through contact with their environment: One child survived into adulthood and became an entrepreneur himself – David Hogg (founder of Hoggs Corporation), founder of Johns Hopkins University). There are several stories about how Mr./Mrs. Wilburn contracted tuberculosis during their stay at Good Hope Camp: One version has them being sickened by mosquitoes when swimming upstream on Beaverdam Creek during a rainstorm; another story has them being so ill that they could no longer attend church services because they were too weak to leave their bed; still another has them contracting TB while playing tag outside when someone came across their campfire early one morning

Laurel is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. It was first settled by English Quakers in the early 17th century. The present-day town was formed from the merger of two other towns on May 3, 1876. Laurel is located on the Eastern Branch of the Potomac River and is bordered to the east by Upper Marlboro and to the west by Hyattsville. The population as of 2012 was 21,821. Laurel has been known for its dramatic hilltops or "hillbillies" since before European settlement began there. In 1692 Captain John Smith discovered a peak called Mount Carmel within sight of what later became Laurel; he named it after Mount Carmel in Turkey where his father had resided for many years before coming to America with his family. The site now occupied by Laurel was first inhabited by Native Americans who hunted game around present-day Anacostia Creek and then built huts near what would become downtown according to one account. A second group of Native Americans lived at nearby Huntingtown until they were forcibly removed in 1714 when King George I ceded part of Prince George's County to England as part of Treaty OF Paris following the Seven Years' War between France and Britain. In 1754 James Smith founded a small trading post on land now east of downtown which he named Fort Myer after Major General James Myer, commander of British forces during the American Revolution who had surrendered at Saratoga Springs in New York City on July 5, 1777 after leading an army against British forces at Yorktown (then Charlottesville). In 1785 Colonel John Armstrong erected a small stone fortification here which served as headquarters for both local militia units and frontier traders until it burned down about 1802." A large grants program initiated under President George Washington gave rise to much development along the Potomac Riverfront over time – including some envisioned for Laurel but never realized due to lack of appropriations or favorable conditions among river partisans such as those associated with First Lady Martha Washington (the wife of Thomas Jefferson).
