Laurel is a town in Prince George’s County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Cheney Metropolitan area. Laurel was founded by John Stevens and his family in 1795 as a small farming community on the Potomac River east of present-day Frederick. In 1802, Stevens moved his family to what is now Laurel after purchasing land from the government for £2 per acre. By 1810, he had built a house and begun trading with other farmers in nearby Upper Marlboro. In 1826, he became Mayor of Laurel and served until 1829 when he resigned to become President of Johns Hopkins University (later Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine). In 1857, Captain Charles Ewing purchased 3 acres (1 km²) northeast of present-day Laurel on High Street from John Stevens for $100. He developed this land into what is now known as Ewing Park.Captain Ewing was instrumental in developing downtown Laurel into an thriving commercial district that includes several restaurants and stores today. His donation also helped finance construction of the first modern high school in Prince George’s County – DeMatha Academy – which opened its doors in 1865 and remains one of the local anchors today. During World War II, many residents relocated to Baltimore because it was considered more almond orchards than Nazi Germany could provide food for their troops stationed abroad; however, much evidence suggests that most people who left were not actually forced out–rather they preferred life in rural Maryland due to its lack of any major city development outside its town limits at that time
Laurel was founded in 1795 by John Laurens and his wife, Anne. The town quickly became a center of trade and commerce, with its own school system and courthouse. In 1814, the town was designated as the capital of Maryland by the state legislature. It remained that way until 1959 when it merged with unincorporated areas around it to form the new city of Bowie.
