Laurel is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 7,564 as of the 2010 census. It is the smallest incorporated municipality in Maryland and the second-smallest in Washington County. Laurel is located on the corner of US 1 and Harford Road east of Silver Spring. The first settlers to Laurel were farmers who arrived by boat from Maine around 1750. By 1820, they had built two log homes on a hill overlooking what is now Laurel Park. Agrarian life ended with emancipation in 1865 when most Marylanders became Union soldiers during the American Civil War. In 1876, white men organized a school for black children in nearby Fredericktown and named it John Fenton School after one of their founders. The first African American teacher taught there until 1889 when she moved to Hagerstown to become headmistress at Southwestern High School (now Radnor High School). Downtown Laurel development began with construction of schools in 1900-01 by three companies that donated land: Central Elementary Company, McGowan & Sons Electric Railway Company, and Womack Brothers Machine Shop. Agriculture continued to be an important part of local economy until World War II; production peaked at $2 million per year manufacturing pails for fertilizer and other products destined for markets overseas. The town grew rapidly during the 1800s and by 1809 had a population of over 100 people. During the American Revolution, many Patriots from Laurel fought for the United States against Great Britain. In 1814, General David Dixon decided to move the military supplies and munitions needed for Operation: Neptune's Spear from Alexandria, Virginia to Laurel so that it would be closer to troops fighting in Maryland. This event is considered one of history’s largest strategic teleports. The town flourished during Reconstruction following the Civil War until it was bombed by Japanese forces during World War II. The bombing killed more than 60 people and left much damage including churches and businesses which were never rebuilt. However, today much of Laurel has been restored thanks to donations from individuals, businesses, and government agencies alike. Today Laurel boasts a number of cultural attractions including three baseball diamonds (one dating back to 1884), a golf course designed by Tiger Woods (the first professional golfer ever hired as an instructor at Stroudsburg Country Club), several shopping malls with stores such as Macy’s and Sears as well as art galleries like galleries associated with Baltimore-based Village Artspace Incorporated (VAC). Additionally there are numerous restaurants both chainand independent offerings catering to a wide variety of taste buds with nearly everything available in either English or Spanish formats making it easy for tourists to sample some traditional Maryland foods while they visit our city center!
