Laurel, Maryland is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,878 at the 2010 census. Laurel is located on the Eastern Shore of Baltimore Province and forms a part of the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. It is bordered to the east by Anne Arundel County and to the south by Harford County. The name "Laurel" comes from two French words meaning "hope." The first word may have been derived from an early settler's name, Pierre LaRoche or Pierre Laurence (1724–1812). The second word may come from a local tree called Acer palmatum which grows near Mount Vernon in Anne Arundel County. Some settlers named their tree after British Prime Minister John Adams (1735–1826), who had settled in Laurel in 1786. The town was incorporated as a village on December 1, 1802. In 1821 it became part of Prince George's County when that county was created from parts of Carroll and Harford Counties. On July 1, 1830 Laurel added land east of its original township line to form what would become known as Southwest Baltimore Township. When that township was abolished on February 14, 1874, Laurel became another unincorporated community within Prince George's County proper again until 1959 when it became one of four townships within the newer suburban neighborhood of Bowietown Heights development outside Ofcstadt MD which evolved out of residents' demand for more services available closer to their homes than those provided by their larger counterparts in Bowietown Heights - primarily Druid Hill Park and government buildings including the then new District Attorney’s Office - just outside West Falls Church VA . The other three townships were Eastern Shore Borough (1958), Randallstown Borough (1966) and Owings Mills Borough (1982).
