The first Europeans to visit what is now Laurel were French traders and missionaries in 1602, but it wasn't until the late 17th century that it became an important trading post on the Susquehanna River because of its strategic location between Philadelphia and Baltimore. In 1795, General John Forbes built Fort Necessity just downstream from present-day Laurel to control trade with Indian nations during the Northwest Rebellion against British rule. The fort served as a base of operations for Ulysses S. Grant's military campaigns in 1812 and 1813 against Native Americans in what is now Delaware County. In 1830, when Prince George's County was established from parts of Anne Arundel and Prince George's counties west of Johns Hopkins University (now known as Baltimore), Laurel became part of that new county. It remained an agricultural center until after World War II when large numbers of people arrived seeking jobs in nearby cities such as Baltimore or Washington D.C.. During the late 1960s through early 1970s there was heavy Gang warfare between rival factions called "the Green Berets". The town prospered during the late 19th century until World War I destroyed much of its infrastructure including schools and hospitals. After the war, many people left for jobs in larger cities or abroad while other businesses continued to thrive thanks to new technology like refrigeration and airplane travel. During this time period, too, many buildings were added to historic listings such as the John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum which are still standing today despite being newly constructed in 1996. The current growth period has seen an increase inboth tourism as well as job opportunities within local businesses that have sprung up around downtown with new restaurants, bars & nightclubs as well as office space available for rent near Interstate 495 outside of town limits
Laurel,Maryland was first settled in 1784 by John Laurel and his wife Elizabeth. The early settlers were from North Carolina and Virginia. In 1814, the United States acquired the land from Spain for $10,000. The town of Laurel was founded on the site of present day Laurel Chapel in 1815. The town was named after a nearby tree, which is thought to have been bearing sugarcane when it was first settled. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln issued an Executive Order designating the town of Laurel as the capital of West Virginia due to its strategic location at the confluence of two rivers. The town's population increased rapidly during this time and by 1870 it had reached 10,000 residents. By 1907, however, growth had stopped and only 2 people lived in Laurel permanently. The economy of Laurel changed dramatically during World War II with an increase in production at munitions plants across Maryland and Pennsylvania Avenue becoming known as "Polk Street". Afterward, there was a significant decrease in activity until steady growth resumed during the late 1990s through2000s driven by new development around US Route 913 including several high-end malls such as JCPenney and Sears Roebuck & Co.. Today some 5500 people call Laurel home with concentrations throughout downtown areas near US Route 913; while other parts of town continue to experience minor population growth due to commuting or employment opportunities available closer to rural residents
