In 1881, his son-in-law James Covington built what became known as Covington Place which retains its early Georgian architecture today. In 1882 Hyattsville also became home to Arlington National Cemetery which then contained 10,000 graves of Union military veterans killed during the American Civil War. At that time community leaders organized a cemetery committee with members including Dr. Samuel Mudd (the first African American mason in America) and Revs Solomon Rutter and Augustus Kelley to bring cemeteries into compliance with federal law regulations on private burial grounds. The communities of Bethesda and Silver Spring soon followed suit, making Hyattsville one of America's most heavily populated black towns by 1890 when Census figures show it had a population of 15,521 residents (with an additional 12 unincorporated areas)). After years of growth following World War II— assisted by new housing developments such as Addison Road—the racial makeup of Hyattsville changed dramatically when riots erupted following Nat Turner's slave uprising in 1865 inside Stonewall Jackson's Camp Cheyney near present day College Park Boulevard/Upper Queen Anne Avenue NW. Northern white mobs burned down buildings throughout downtown on July 4th while Black soldiers were ordered not to interfere or be arrested; this led eventually to passage of The Racial Discrimination Act (1935) which made it illegal for businesses or institutions214to discriminate against any race within their walls without consequence thereby ending Jim Crow segregation across America ().

In 1835-36, John Smeaton built a sawmill within sight of where he lived nearpresent day Market Street and First Avenue North. This mill became one of many that operated along High Street between Carrolltown Road (now Old Georgetown Road) and Ridgecroft Drive until it closed down during World War II due to being too close to military bases overseas; however some evidence remains that suggests it may have been among those mills that also produced cloths for American troops abroad during World War II A Baptist church was built here about 1840 by Reverend Elisha Stevenswick; it burned down about 1865 but has been rebuilt several times since then including most recently in 2006 There are three schools – two elementary schools (grades K-2) and one high school – located within walking distance or easily accessible via public transportation from Hyattsville proper: Edward Everett Hale Elementary School (grades PK-8), Hagerstown Area Vocational Technical School (grades 9-12), Laurelmont Middle/High School (grades 7 & 8). Hyattsville was once a small town located in Prince George's County, Maryland. The area now known as Hyattsville was first settled by German immigrants in the late 18th century. In 1814, the community changed its name to Hyattsville after Major General James Hyatt, who had served in the War of 1812. The town's population increased rapidly during the early 19th century due to agricultural production and trade within the surrounding rural areas. By 1830, Hyattsville had a school, churches, a post office, and two stores. By 1860, there were over 100 people living in Hyattsville. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Hyattsville became an important military supply depot for Union forces on Mount Vernon Heights. In 1865, following the war's end, HyattsVILLE reverted back to its original name of 'Hyattsville'. During the 20th century, several businesses have been located in and around HyattsVILLE including: United Parcel Service (UPS), Verizon Wireless (VZW), Pepsi Cola World Headquarters (PepsiCo), Microsoft Windows Dirigent Center (MSNBC), and The Weingarten Inn & Suites - all of which continue to operate today.
