The name "Hyattsville" comes from two places: one meaning "a field overgrown with huckleberries" (from Old English hūcgīt + tille), meaning "place where huckleberries are found," while another place called Haughton may have originated from an early settler's idea that he named after his friend James Haughton (1754-1828), who had been secretary to Lord Baltimore during the American Revolution.

It is part of the Hyattsville-Springfield community and it is located about one mile east of Springfield. The town was founded by Captain John Hyatt on October 25, 1757 as a trading post on the Anacostia River. On January 1, 1871, Hyattsville became a borough. The first store in Hyattsville was built by Ephraim Fenton in 1824. In 1829 Isaac Wright opened his grocery store here and other businesses followed soon after. One of the first streetcar lines ran through town in 1868 and business quickly increased due to this transportation option which allowed residents to move between different parts of the county easily. In 1865, Samuel Morse established a telegraph line from his farm near Bowie to Hyattsville providing important communication for Washington D.C.. This event helped spur development within the town as people started to learn about their new neighbor and started sending their goods back and forth between Baltimore and D.C.. Families began moving out oftown during the late 1800s because of affordable housing opportunities available in nearby Frederick or Annapolis townships; however, many residents continued living in Hyattsville until after World War II when Costain Farms subdivided much of what had once been an agricultural parish into blocks that could be sold for Housing Development money (Homes for All).
