Hyattsville is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Hyattsville is one of two towns in Prince George's County that are considered " incorporated municipalities." The other is College Park. Hyattsville was founded by John Wirt and his brother James Wirt on October 15, 1814 as a small village near where they now live. It was named after the family's ancestral home in Scotland. The first store in Hyattsville opened its doors on May 11, 1815. On November 15 of that year, John Wirt and James Wirt married each other here. They continued to operate the store until it closed its doors for good on January 2, 1861 due to economic troubles caused by the American Civil War. The couple had six children: three girls and three boys. In 1865, Hyattsville became part of Frederick County when it was created from parts of Prince George's and Frederick counties. In 1867-68, it also became part of Harford County when that county was created from parts of Cecil and Montgomery counties. By 1924, all 7 jurisdictions had been folded into Prince George's County government under then-County Executive Hiram Davenport Jr.. On February 14th, 1927 Hyattsville celebrated its centennial with an event which included a parade down Main Street followed by a picnic at Prospect Park which featured games such as quoits and cornhole boards among others activities for the youngsters; both events were open to the public free of charge! A new high school complex (now known as Donelson High School) opened inHyattstown Township in 1969 following allegations that then-Prince George’s County Schools Superintendent Isaac Purdy embezzled funds while he served as Education Commissioner; Purdy ultimately pleaded guilty to four counts of misdemeanor theft charges but avoided prison time because he received 3 years probation instead! In 1984 construction began on what would become Hyattstown Elementary School - this building would become home to many generations of students over the years until finally being replaced by Donelson High School in 1999! One significant event during this time period occurred on September 10th 1978 when American president Jimmy Carter made an appearance at Frederick Douglass High School during his visit to Maryland; this event helped spread awareness about human rights issues throughout America during his presidency! One year later on October 1st 1979 another national attention platform arrived when Ulysses S Grant National Monument was dedicated across from Riverview Casino & Resort following plans by then-Governor Ronald Reagan; this event helped promote tourism withinMaryland!!! After several years without any major projects taking place within the township or even being announced much less completed (!), tensions began bubbling over between residents/townspeople and their elected officials due largely to increases taxes assessed upon them without proper justification through no means whatsoever - leading eventually to a series of peaceful protests throughout late 2017/early 2018 aimed squarely at gaining more transparency & accountability from those responsible for these decisions!!

Hyattsville was settled in 1781 by John Hyatt and his family. The town became a thriving community thanks to its natural resources, including coal, iron ore, and timber. In 1814, the U.S. government established Fort McHenry in Hyattsville to protect American shipping interests in the Chesapeake Bay area. The fort served as a military stronghold for centuries and is now a museum.
