The Hyattsville Rifle and Pistol Club was founded on the corner of 5th Street and Evangelist Avenue in Hyattsville, Maryland in 1868. It became a Federally chartered rifle and pistol club in 1893. The club's first president was George W. Smith. In 1916, the club purchased an old arsenal building at 6th Street and Defense Place from the United States Arsenal Company for use as their clubhouse. In 1924, Hyattsville Rifle & Pistol Club moved to its present location at 901 North Third Street. They continue to operate out of this property today. The club has been involved in many activities such as NRA annual meetings, muzzleloading tournaments, annual golf tournaments, etc., until recently winning numerous awards including being one of the top 10 rifle clubs in America for 10 years consecutively (1998-2012).
Hyattsville is a city in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 18,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Washington Metropolitan Area. Hyattsville is home to Hyattsville State University and the Research Park for Innovation in Technology (RIPT). The first permanent settler in what is now Hyattsville was Nicholas-Jacques de Montresor, who arrived with his wife and two children on July 4, 1684. He named his new village after himself and his brother-in-law Sir John Smith of Saybrook Colony in England. One of Montresor's descendants, Nicholas-Jacques' grandson Nathaniel DeMontresor served as Baltimore's Mayor from 1792 to 1800 and as Governor of Maryland from 1804 to 1817. In 1795, DeMontresor purchased land at present day Mount Vernon Place from Thomas Gage for £10 per acre. In 1814, Englishman John Fenton made an unsuccessful attempt to establish a trading post at what is now Hyattsville while traveling through Prince George's County on his way to visit family in Baltimore. Five years later, he erected a small frame building on the site that became known as "Fenton House." In 1824–1825 he built a more substantial structure which still stands today as Fenton Hall; it served as the town hall until 1955 when it was replaced by the current facility on 12th Street NW. George Wythe Sr., founder of Wythe College (later American University), bought 1/4 of league ( ), or about , near present day Mount Vernon Place in 1835 for $2½ million dollars ($240 million adjusted 2016 inflation). At this time Mount Vernon Place consisted of only some hundred acres of forested land west of downtown Hyattsville and east of Route 202 near modern day Bowie Elementary School and West Falls Church Middle School sites; much later additional parcels were acquired surrounding present dayHyattsville Village Center area including most recently 78 acres adjacent to Bowie Elementary School site since 2018 . Wythe College relocated its main campus from Fredericktown MD (now Takoma) MD to what are now all located within blocks north/west of downtown Hyattsville – making it one mile wide between buildings rather than 2 miles like earlier – soon followed by similar moves across various campuses throughout America during this era including Waco TX where Baylor Univ moved intoMcLennan Stadium following football game between Baylor & UTAM back in 1998

In recent years, much redevelopment has taken place within what once were considered working-class neighborhoods adjacent to downtown Hyattsville; some examples are Simons Landing (a mixed-use development comprising luxury apartments and retail space), Crossroads Place (a mixed-use development featuring residential units above ground parking lots), and Atherton Place (an apartment complex with extensive green roofs). These developments have helped boost economic activity within local neighborhoods while preserving historic architecture and Jamaican Creole culture which remains a key part of local life today.
