Hyattsville was founded by John Hyatt and his family in 1792. The first settler in what is now Hyattsville was James Kinloch, who arrived with his family in 1792. In 1801, John Fenton bought land from Kinloch for $200 and built a house on it called "Fenton Manor". In 1814, Robert Ewing purchased land from Fenton and founded what is now Hyattsville as an agricultural community with 4 miles (6 km) of roads and 100 acres (40 ha) of land to raise crops. By 1830, there were 20 houses in total and 150 people living there. In 1835, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad arrived in Hyattsville and began transporting goods to Fredericktown for sale across the Potomac River. This increased shipping activity which led to more development around the town center including brickyards, breweries, hotels and stores. By 1840–41, there were over 300 people living in Hyattsville with businesses such as a distillery, saddlers' shop and carpenter shops dotting its streetscape. In 1846–47 The Northern Mutual Life Insurance Company moved into one of the first buildings located near today's Civic Center Drive when it merged with Baltimore & Ohio Railway company as part of a larger merger that included all railroads operating within Maryland under one management system known as Penn Central Railroad System). By 1850s most residents had left due to economic reasons such as competition from other towns along Interstate 95 or because of railroad transportation costs becoming too high for their modest incomes. However some families continued to live here until after World War II when they were displaced by postwar construction projects or simply moving away because their place became too rural or expensive outside city limits again during this time period
