The Hyattsville area has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The first Europeans to arrive in this part of Maryland were the French. They came with trading posts and started farming in what is now Hyattsville. In 1814, American forces sacked the French post, which created a new source of revenue for America. The town was founded on July 4, 1814 by Major General Alpheus Proctor as a military settlement in anticipation of future hostilities between America and France. It was named for Sir George Scott, 1st Baronet who had died two years earlier at sea while exploring North America. Although not an official U.S town until 1838, it became one of the most important agricultural centers in Maryland during the mid-19th century because of its access to markets and its position near the Potomac River.
