Lee spent many years living and working in Hyattsville before moving to Lexington, Virginia in 1861 to become Commander-in-Chief of the Confederate States Army. In 1865, after the surrender of Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House, General Lee moved back to Hyattsville and died there two years later at age 80. Hyattsville was renamed for Major General John Wofford Hyatt on May 25, 1882 when he became Mayor of Frederick City (at that time an incorporated village). The name change reflected Washington's directive that "all places with a...name which has been used by Americans since their independence should be so re-named." In 1951, Hyattsville merged with neighboring Frederick City to form a new city known as Fredericktown which still exists today as an incorporated community within Prince George's County.
