Hyattsville is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 23,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hyattsville–Bethesda, MD-VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was laid out on April 15, 1795 by Colonel John Smith as part of a survey of Upper Potomac Valley land. Its name honored George Washington and his wife Martha Custis Scott (1751-1837), daughter of British general James Scott (1722-1792). The first house in the town was built by General Smith in 1796. In 1814, Hyattsville became the home of President James K. Polk and his family during his visit to America before leaving for Europe. It was also the birthplace on July 4th, 1838 of Vice President Martin Van Buren who had been elected four days earlier than expected after being chosen by a caucus from among senators who opposed Andrew Johnson's presidential candidacy because he belonged to the Democratic Party instead of the Republican Party. Queen Victoria made it her summer residence from 1859 until her death in 1901; she spent summers at Windsor Castle and Cobham House near Leamington Spa. On October 12, 1861 Hyattsville residents voted not to secede from Maryland due to fears about possible violence if they did so; however this vote did not mean that theirTown would remain unincorporated throughout the American Civil War which lasted two years and ended with Union victory on November 11th 1865 over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House south of Richmond Virginia.) In 1871 when Baltimore & Ohio Railroad began construction through Prince George's County it changed ownership 3 times but always called itself "the Baltimore & Ohio Railway Company" until its sale to Conrail in 1976 which renamed it "The Norfolk Southern Corporation.") Hyattsville Post Office opened January 1st 1870(as "Dover Hundred") under new postal laws that gave rural post offices five years start up time and allowed them to charge more for services than larger towns like Hyattsville.(Although Dover Hundred continued operations as an incorporated village until 1907.)) On December 31st 1910 a fire destroyed most all buildings including Old Dormitories Schoolhouse barns and granaries within one hour destroys much personal property including almost all kitchen utensils used by residents for over 100 years) After three months no damage has been discovered or repaired even though there have been numerous high powered searches especially looking for any sign of what caused this devastating fire
There has been a long and complicated history of magazines in the United States. The first magazine was likely built by Captain John Smith in 1795, as part of his weapon inventory. By 1812, there were at least twelve rifle and six handgun magazines in the United States. The first cartridges were invented by Dr. Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795. He created a round that could be fired from a smoothbore cannon and was initially used to fire balls out of cannons on Long Island. In 1802, he developed what is now known as .22 caliber ammunition for pistols and rifles. In 1836, George Ball had the idea to create a magazine that could hold rounds for handguns called "Ball's Magazine." It proved popular, and soon multiple manufacturers produced magazines for handguns including Smith & Wesson, Colt Firearms Company, Remington Arms Company, Savage Arms Company, et al. By 1840 there were more than 1 million pistol magazines in America alone! By 1865 both ball and revolver magazines had been replaced with metallic clips which allowed firearms to be stored more easily with less danger of theft or loss. This change also made it easier for law enforcement officers to confiscate weapons from criminals or fugitives!
In 1871, the first issue of The Rifleman was published. In 1903, the first issue of The Gunfighter was published.
Hyattsville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 7,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Washington Metropolitan Area. Hyattsville is located on U.S. Route 301 and within walking distance of the Washington Monument and Mount Vernon Museum. The town was established in 1814 by General Robert Ewing as a summer resort for officers of the Army of Northern Virginia who were quartered at Fort Meade on nearby Springbrook Hill. In 1857, when Frederick Douglass visited Baltimore, he recommended that black citizens move to Hyattsville so that they could be near white people without feeling segregated or embarrassed. When Douglass returned to Baltimore in 1861, he contributed $5 to start the Colored School Society here in order to provide education for black children living below poverty lines in Baltimore City and elsewhere in Maryland during the American Civil War. In 1865, after Confederate forces burned down their own barracks here while retreating from Gettysburg, Union troops began bombing attacks against buildings inside and outside of town during what became known as "The Battle of Hyattsville." One resident recalled: "Our little town went through such an upset over this – not just because we lost our barracks but also because we had no idea what was going on outside! I think it made us all more patriotic." The bombings stopped soon thereafter but left behind damage including broken windows and some homes completely destroyed; these events are commemorated annually with a event called "Battle Window Day." - Aftermath of Battle of Hyattsville: A day when many damaged properties were repaired
The Hyattsville community was first settled in 1798. The name is derived from the fact that James Hyatt, a wealthy farmer, donated land for the town. The town grew rapidly after the railroad arrived in 1876, and by 1907 it had over 1,500 residents. In 1925, Hyattsville became an independent municipality.
