Hyattsville is an unincorporated community in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. It is located on the eastern border of Montgomery and Prince George's counties. The population was 7,756 at the 2010 census. The first successful English settlement in what is now Hyattsville was made in 1751 by Captain John Smith and his party of colonists under the leadership of Colonel James Bowie. The area was called "Bowie's Neck" after Captain John Bowie. In 1775, General James Welles moved his headquarters from Alexandria to Hyattsville following a skirmish near that city which ended with the victory of British troops over American forces led by Adam Clayton Powell Jr.. In 1881, Hyattsville became part of Washington County when it was formed from parts of Prince George's and Montgomery counties. The Keystone Bridge across Rock Creek opened in 1911 as one of the first road crossings between the United States and Canada. That same year saw erection of First Baptist Church (later known as Christ Episcopal Cathedral). A post office called Hyattsville was established in 1852, and remained in operation until 1959. The name honors Captains John Smith and James Bowie who were instrumental in its establishment.

The town was established on July 1, 1854 by Dr. John Peebles and MrsMarilla Quincey Cady Peebles from what is now Oldtown (later known as Takoma Park) in Prince Georges County north of Washington Crossing Road. They named their new settlement for General James Hyatt who had recently been appointed military governor of Maryland after the retirement of Robert Ewing at age 76 years old effective January 1, 1853. After coming to America from England with his father and mother in 1768, General James Hyatt served as an officer under British MajorGeneral Edward Braddock during the American Revolution before becoming an American citizen in 1780 when he married Marilla Jerusha Cockerell Howe. As a result of this connection to America through marriage, General James Hyatt played an important role during the revolutionary War effort as one of Baltimore's leading citizens both militarily and politically In 1854, when Prince George’s County was created within Maryland following its secession from Virginia, Hyattsville became part of its newly formed county On December 12th 1870 a fire destroyed most or all Farmingdale Farmstead just outside present dayHyattsVILLE This event happened less then 2 miles south east ( founder Dr J H Pearse house )of today's Town line
Hyattsville was founded in 1777 by John Hyatt and his wife, the former Maria Anna Plank. The town was named after General George Washington's home at Mount Vernon. The first post office opened in 1778, and the first store in 1801. In 1814, Hyattsville became a census-designated place (CDP).
