Hyattsville is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 24,854 at the 2010 census. The Hyattsville Historic District is a National Register of Historic Places listings[1]. The name "Hyattsville" comes from the estate of Colonel John C. Hyatt which was located near what is now Hyattsville Park. The first mention of Hyattsville can be traced back to 1673 when Captain John Smith and his men were welcomed by Colonel Francis Hopkins at the "Hyattstown" estate. A few years later, General James Johnston made camp at "Hopkins' Mill" on the Potomac River where he met and befriended Hugh Williamson who would play an important role in Johnston's army during the American Revolution. In 1784, Captain John Smith again visited "Hopkins' Mill." He noted that there were three houses and twenty-six acres (11 ha) of land hereabouts that he had not seen before due to its location on an older plantation called Mount Vernon Necklace which was being developed by Benedict Arnold and Lord Baltimore. In 1786, President George Washington moved into Mount Vernon with his family after they bought it from Baron von Steuben for $72,000 plus interest. That year also saw the first public school opened in America in what would become known as Christ Church School (later renamed Episcopal High School). In 1801-02, Congress passed legislation authorizing two new counties - PrinceGeorge's County and Frederick County - within whichhyattsville would fall within Frederick County only as far as Fort Washington Road where it intersects MD 521 / US 1; but this arrangement did not last long as PrinceGeorge's County became fully independent shortly thereafter. For many years until about 1905 or so when electricity came to town proper along with telephone service, post office services and other amenities thanks largely to Reverend Drury Bishop who ran Bethesda Presbyterian Church across Route 301 from 1875 until his death in 1915,[2] residents mainly relied upon horse drawn carriages or wagons for transportation inside and out of town because there wasn't much else available then aside from dirt roads leading away from both Fort Washington Road/MD 521 (the main road into town) AND Md 495 (which led north towards Uxbridge). This slowly changed however starting around 1955 when various businesses began opening up all over town including a general store/ bakery/ gas station etc., giving people more options for transportation especially given how close most people lived to their jobs(especially if they lived downtown). Thanks mostly to Mayor Jimmie Knowles who worked tirelessly over many years getting various businesses open up like PNC Bank(now Wells Fargo), JCPenney(now Macy's), Sprint PCS(now Verizon Wireless), Rite Aid(now Walgreens), Dunkin' Donuts[3], Starbucks,[4], Dogpatch BBQ & Brewery[5], Eastern Avenue Shopping Center[6] among others making streetscape improvements such as adding streetlights etc.,ushering development in what has come to be known as "The Town". Today you can still see some evidence of these early days such as horse chestnuts trees still standing outside most businesses although those have been replaced lately by larger trees
