For many years, this was the only settlement in what would later become Hyattsville Township. By 1824, however, there were already several other villages or towns in Eastern Shore County that had been established over time due to their importance for trade or their location near points of strategic importance such as Baltimore City or Washington D.C.. One such village was West Friendship which was founded by Lieutenant Colonel William Butler in 1792 when he took possession of part of Point Lookout from native Indians following their defeat at Battle OF Yorktown on April 12th,. West Friendship quickly grew into a thriving commercial town with several stores and homes located around Market Square where merchants could sell goods including cloths, shoes, produce etc., as well as provide services such as laundry/garden care and carriage service In addition to its commercial activity, West Friendship also became home to some important military personnel during the War Of 1812 including Major General John Armstrong who served under Nathan Bedford Forrest at Fort Mifflin during that conflict West Friendship also experienced some political significance following its establishment with both members of Congress (Peter Cushingy & Asahel Parsons) living here while serving in northern Virginia After the war ended in 1814 though, much like many other communities throughout Eastern Shore County - including West Friendship - it slowly began to decline due primarily to lack of attention from local officials . However, thanks largely to efforts by Captains George Hyatt & John Witherspoon - both men born and raised within nearby Johns Hopkins University – things changed beginning in earnest after Captains George & John's death . During Captains George & John's lifetime much effort was put into creating schools within thecommunity which helped promote education amongst locals; this continued through Captains John Witherspoon's tenure until his death two decades later In fact , between 1800-1850 school enrollment increased from 350 students per grade level up untilCaptains G&J's death more than doubled that figure! hyatsvilleschoolinghistory
