The area that would become Hagerstown was first settled by Europeans in 1634 when Englishman Thomas Meade and his wife Elizabeth founded the town of Frederick on the Potomac River. In 1814, when American forces invaded Canada during the War for Independence, General James Kenedy ordered Major General Anthony Wayne to march southward through Maryland with orders to capture Baltimore City if possible before turning back northward to cross into Pennsylvania. On September 25th near Lexington Heights (now Fenton) under heavy artillery fire from British troops commanded by Lt.-General Sir Edmund Burkemore Hamilton they marched 60 miles nonstop acrossMarylandbayoushippingtoboston under coverof darkness on October 3rd without incident except for a few skirmishes with British forces over roadblocks along their route which they managed to overcome using guerrilla tactics while also catching up with advances made by Royal Canadian Infantry Corps Commander Lieutenant Colonel John Graves Simcoe about two miles behind enemy lines at Forrester’s Tavern (present day Mount Vernon). After reaching Boston he turned around and returned home after losing more than 200 men killed or wounded including Major General Wayne himself although he still remains highly respected by many Americans today as one of our most successful military commanders during this pivotal time period
