When Hagerstown, Maryland was founded in 1767, it was a small town of about 1,000 people. The town's founder, John Hager, had the idea to place a telescope on the roof of his home so that he could view the stars at night. It is the namesake of General Samuel Hager (1786-1863), an American general during the Mexican War and president of West Virginia from 1829 to 1835. The town was founded by Nicholas Holmes in 1795 as a small farming community on land donated by Joshua Hager. The first post office was established in 1796. A sawmill and gristmill were built here in 1801; the mill burned down in 1865 but was rebuilt and operated until it closed in 1896. In 1814, Dr. John Marshall moved his medical practice to what became Hagerstown after he found that Baltimore could not provide him with enough doctors. By 1840, most of the men of Hagerstown had fled following annexation by Washington County as part of the state of Maryland. In 1861, General Robert Easley decided to move his headquarters from Frederick to Hagerstown because its location near Williamsburg allowed him more independence from Confederate forces operating within Prince George's County and throughout Northern Virginia. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln called for troops to be sent into northern Virginia after learning about Confederate attempts to stir up violence against Union officers and citizens living within their borders. On July 14, 1862 – three days before battle began – General Robert Easley ordered all huts belonging to Union soldiers located within two miles (3 km) of Antietam Creek (present day Winchester) burned as a warning to any Confederate forces nearby not to attemptto cross or attack Union positions without prior authorization from Easley himself On July 16th Confederate forces attempted an assault on Union positions at Antietam Creek only for it repulsed with heavy losses for both sides On July 20th Battle began when Confederates attacked Union positions around Bemis Heights northeast of Hagerstown
