Hagerstown, Maryland is home to the Hagerstown Rifle and Pistol Club, which has been engaging in target shooting for over a century. The club was founded on July 10, 1892 by Captain John H. Cady and his son-in-law Colonel John W. Sears. At that time, target shooting was still a popular pastime in the town. As targets got smarter and more realistic, so too did the sport of target shooting. With every new technology and innovation comes a new way to shoot targets; this is especially true with modern firearms such as handguns. One of the earliest handgun manufacturers to enter the market with Target Shooting pistols was Colt’s Manufacturing Company in 1896. A few years later, Rochester Firearms Corporation introduced their Model 1909 Target Pistol which quickly became one of America’s most popular handguns for target practice and competition. Today,Target Shooting pistols continue to be a favorite choice for shooters across all levels of play due to their accuracy, realism, and durability. In fact, Target Shooting pistols are even being used as self-defense weapons! In recent years there have been several efforts made by local communities throughout Maryland to preserve traditional Targetshooting culture at various sites around town (e.g., Inner Harbor). These initiatives help promote rifle/pistol culture through education and preservation projects that occur throughout the year at various locations within our state capital city of Baltimore . Today there are approximately 2200 members active in Hagerstown Rifle & Pistol Club; membership fees range from $5 per month dues to $100 per year dues (for individuals who participate in local shoots). League meets monthly with NRA certified instructors from across Maryland to discuss topics related to firearm safety & Marksmanship including match days & prize competitions etc.; class sizes are usually small enough so everyone can learn together while having plenty of opportunity for skill development should they want it! There are also numerous social events held each month geared towards promoting friendly competition amongst friends as well as enjoying some quality time outdoors!

The town was founded on July 16, 1814 by Colonel Robert Ewing as a military post for troops marching against the Seminole Indians. In 1835 it became aKnowlesville Township under legislation passed by Congress which granted township status to all townships within 1 mile of the Potomac River without regard to political boundaries. In 1871 when Baltimore and Frederick Counties were merged into Prince George's County, Hagerstown became part of that new county and lost its township status but retained its own name until 1924 when it changed back to Hagerstown State University
