Hagerstown is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 14,522 at the 2010 census. It is the 9th-most populous municipality in the county and the second-most populous community outside of Baltimore City. As of July 1, 2014, Hagerstown had become an incorporated city with a mayor and City Council. The first settlement in what is now Hagerstown was made by colonists from Yorkshire on September 10, 1798. They named their new village "Hague" after John Harrison who explored and mapped much of western North America during that time. In 1827, following the creation of Prince George's County as part of the federal government under President James K. Polk, Hagerstown became one of two towns within its boundaries – along with Fredericktown – that were not annexed to Baltimore City until 1885. The original white inhabitants of Hagerstown were Swiss immigrants who arrived during the early 1800s to work in nearby tanneries and rice plantations; they built their homes around a small creek known as Pimlico Creek because it was easy to transport goods by boat upriver to central Maryland or Eastern Virginia. By 1875 there were only about 20 residents living in town proper; most residents worked on farms or lumber mills nearby or downriver in Upper Marlboro or Bowie counties. In 1886 negotiations began for a railroad connection between Harford County and Northern Maryland through Hagerstown; this project eventually led to the construction of the Pennsylania Railroad which ran through town from 1901 to 1913 (the last decade see also Amalgamated Copper Company). When World War I began in April 1914, many men from northern Maryland volunteered for service overseas; many found employment working on railways and other industry sites throughout northwestern Pennsylvania and eastern Maryland before returning home late in 1915. notably among these veterans was Edward Sanger Sr., owner/operator of Sanger’s grocery store at 1139 West Main Street where he operated his business until his death in 1951; Sanger’s son EdwardSanger III continued operations until 1984 when it closed due to changing demographics within Harford County (now suburban Montgomery County). After World War I ended there were increasing calls for more housing developments closer to jobs rather than miles away from villages such as Hagerstown; accordingly plans were made for annexation by Baltimore City but resistance grew until 1920 when Mayor Jno.[?] Ladd agreed terms allowing incorporation into HarfordCounty without any changes whatsoever – making Hagerstown one of just three cities within Prince George's County never annexed by city government: Bowie (the others being Lansdowne & Park Heights) although incorporation did not come into effect until 1931 when all three became formally incorporated cities underMayor Harry Fenton Jr..
