Hagerstown is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 24,594 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Prince George's County and the largest municipality in the county by land area. The first inhabitants of Hagerstown were Native Americans who lived near present-day Friendship Heights. The Potomac River served as their main water supply. The first European to visit Hagerstown was Captain John Smith in 1676 when he traveled up the river from Jamestown to Cumberland Island. In 1791, Hagerstown became part of Washington Territory after the Treaty of Paris ended the Revolutionary War. The town developed rapidly due to its location on a major trade route and its access to waterways for shipping and farming. By 1800, Hagerstown had a population of about 2,000 people. In 1821, General James Ketchum decided that Hagerstown should become his new military campaign headquarters because it was located close to where most of his troops were quartered and because it offered easy access to transportation routes for supplies and troops. Ketchum named his new city after Major General Nathanael Greene who had commanded British forces during the American Revolution. During World War II, Hagerstown played an important role inthe Battle of Stonington (1944). Hagerstown also contains churches and other religious institutions dating back to 1810 and 1835 as well as an woolen mill built in 1865 that continues to produce yarn today. The first white person to settle here was James Knoop who arrived in 1792 and purchased land from the Native Americans for £100 sterling. Knoop named his new settlement "Hagerstown" after his father-in-law, Colonel William Hagersberger who had been a major general during the American Revolution. In 1800, John McClure immigrated from Scotland along with his family and founded what would become McClure Mill on Main Street beside present day Eisenhower Boulevard. This early milling company manufactured flour for local markets as well as exporting their output all across North America. By 1830, McClure had outgrown his initial equipment so he erected a larger gristmill on Battlefield Road just east of present day Court House Square (now West Falls Church District). From this mill began what would be known as “theMcClure Mill Trail” which runs through much of Prince George’s County today with stops at various heritage properties along its way including Hagerstown Mills State Park where you can see evidence of both Grains Mill operations dating back to 1672 as well as more recent machinery used in production such as the now defunct Weyerhaeuser belt railroad car factory which produced locomotives for years until it closed down in 1970).
