It is part of the Upper Milford Township and the Hagerstown–area school system. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hagerstown were three men from Scotland who landed onceived by John Smith on December 6, 1676. They named their new land "Mount Vernon," after one of the several places in England they had seen as prospective sites for a plantation colony. In 1746, James Mclean sold about 12 acres (5 ha) of what is now Hagerstown to Colonel John Boyd for £100 sterling. Here he built a gristmill which became one of the economic engines of Hagerstown during its early years. In 1772 Captain Abraham Blount purchased 471 acres (191 ha) around present-day Mount Vernon from Colonel Boyd and moved his family here to live and plant crops until 1800 when he sold another 443 acres (175 ha) including portions of present-day Mount Vernon to George Washington for $25,000 in cash and 5 slaves each. Fort Washington was built nearby on this land in 1814 as part of General Frederick Henry Lee's military campaign against Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in Texas; it served as United States Military Hospital until 1945. After American independence, Hagerstown developed into an industrial center due largely to its location near Potomac River crossings where iron ore could be shipped downriver for processing into rails and other products
