Hagerstown is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 21,872 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Prince George's County by population. The town was founded on May 10, 1814 by Captain Abraham Hager and his family after they arrived from Connecticut. In 1881, Hagerstown became an incorporated municipality. The first settler in what would become Hagerstown was Captain Abraham Hager himself who came overland from Connecticut on May 10th of that year with his family. He and his wife Lydia set up shop along the Potomac River and started trading goods with the Indians. By 1814 there were already some families living in this area including John Chrétien who had come down from Pennsylvania about two years earlier and built a cabin near present day mile marker 9 on Ulysses S Grant Boulevard just east of Interstate 95 highway exit 94A (now part of I-95). It wasn't until 1830 when Colonel Augustus Scranton donated land to form what is now known as Scranton Township which bordered on Frederick County to the south and west while neighboring Howard County to the north consisted mostly of woods with few homes or buildings existing other than for occasional log cabins used by local farmers during agricultural seasons. In 1881 when Hagerstown became an incorporated municipality it included portions of both Frederick andHoward Counties making it one of the most diverse communities within its borders today with people from all over southern Maryland as well as Virginia and Pennsylvania backgrounds! Hagerstown has experienced many changes throughout its history but can be attributed to 3 main factors: 1) The growth of surrounding jurisdictions; 2) annexation by Washington D.C.; 3) The influx of new residents following World War II which brought new jobs, lifestyles, businesses etc.? All three factors have played a role in shaping today’s community – both good AND bad!

Polk ordered Brigadier General William Troup to take control of all Indian Affairs in Prince George's County and Fort Meade was built as part of this effort. Due to its location on a major trade route between Washington D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia, Hagerstown became an important commercial center during thelate 19th century. In 1847-48 Union General Ulysses S Grant conducted his famous march through Prince George's County from Harpers Ferry to Winchester which destroyed much of rural life along the way including Hagerstown. During World War II many US companies had their headquarters in or near Hagerstown such as Ford Motor Company who built a plant adjacent to Garrison Army Ammunition Plant until it closed in 2006 due to sequestration cuts that took effect then

In 1865, Hagerstown was renamed Catonsville after General Ulysses S. Grant who had been Commanding Officer of XX Corps during the war.
