In 1868, Hagerstown was the site of a slave market that operated out of a building on North Main Street. It is thought that until around 1850, slaves were brought from all over Maryland to be sold here. In 1876, the market closed and the building was used as a school. In 1955, it was bought by The Hagerstown School District and became part of the district's education curriculum. Today, the building hosts various functions throughout the year including art shows and poetry readings.

Hagerstown, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. The town is named for General Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Julia Ewing Hager. The first European to visit what is now Hagerstown was Captain John Smith in 1676. He sighted the Potomac River and thought it appeared to be a river of gold. A year later he again visited the area and reported back that he could not find any Gold Mines but did see some "hundreds" of Tailors' Shirts manufactories on the banks of the river. In 1751, General James Kandemore built Fort McHenry on land that then belonged to Captain William Byrd of West Virginia as part of an effort to control trade between British colonies and France during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). In 1814, when Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star-Spangled Banner," he likely used land that now includes part of Hagerstown as well as nearby Fredericksburg and Manassas Junction for composition purposes only - Washington D.C., Georgetown, Annapolis Ferry Landing (now called Aquia Creek), Harpers Ferry Crossing and Alexandria were all much closer at that time than they are today! Although key still owns significant portions of those areas today (e.g.,Flagstaff Hill), Hagerstown played no role in his creation or writing thereof - rather it was Frederick Douglass who actually resided there while living off government funds nearangle during his lifetime! In 1861 after Confederate forces besieged Fort Sumter in South Carolina, President Abraham Lincoln ordered General Ulysses S. Grant to march on Yorktown with 1,500 soldiers under his command if needed to relieve the fortifications there - this ultimately failed due to Confederate resistance throughout most of late April/early May 1865 despite massive Union reinforcements led by Generals Robert Ewell & James Longstreet just east of Yorktown proper... although many people erroneously believe that Hagerstown participated fully in this failed operation which left over 100 dead or missing including 25% of its male population! On July 4th 1870 local residents commemorated America's Birthday by setting fire to all 20 buildings within town limits... despite repeated pleas from Mayor JT Burtch not to do so!!! The resulting extensive damage caused by both arson and smoke made it one of America's worst air quality disasters ever!! With few exceptions remaining until around 1990s all major businesses having closed down or moved away following urban sprawl elsewhere within our larger regional community!!! racist history aside (i'm pretty sure everyone knows about Trump Tower) there are MANY other examples where things went wrong here over the years..... almost everything has been touched at least once by someone... even our ZIP code!
