Hagerstown is a city in Washington County, Maryland, on the Potomac River. The population was 17,553 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Hagerstown" comes from Nicholas Haggerty (1811–1875). His father built a log cabin here about 1820-24 CE which served as both home & office for Nicholas' father & him during their early days as farmers/commerce men in east Montgomery County., but it didn't stay long there - within 5 years or so they moved out into what is now downtown Hagerstown proper due to various factors including better access to water buffalo fodder available hereabouts than further upriver etc.)Nicholas then took his new name - given to him by one John Neely (1799-1868) who ran a small grocery store just east of Market Street where he lived (& died) prior to moving uptown some time between 1826-28 CE: henceforth known locally as 'Neelyville'. The first people to live in Hagerstown were English colonists who founded the town in 1676 as Hagersville after their colony of Haverfordwest was destroyed by Indians. The name "Hagerstown" may be derived from the Dutch word "hagert", meaning "a hillock." In 1795, General Anthony Wayne's Army passed through Hagerstown on its way to battle against Virginians at Monmouth Court House. In 1814 and 1815 Congress passed acts providing for an agricultural survey of King George County and for making appropriations for that purpose; also, Act No. 547 approved December 3, 1814 provided for a court house and jail at Hagerstown. In 1830 Abraham Lincoln was born here while his father was serving as a Ulysses S. Grant's presidential candidate in Illinois; he later served two terms as Congressman from this district before moving to Springfield, Illinois (then called Peoria). After the American Civil War began in 1861 many residents left pour join Confederate forces or flee into Union territory but about 1/3 of all male residents had remained by 1865 when Union troops besieged the town during the Siege of Petersburg All male citizens were required to leave within 24 hours of orders coming down from headquarters notifying them that they must either abandon their homes or put up arms against their own countrymen Halfway through 1863 most men had complied with Orders but about 1000 women and children still refused to leave home without food or shelter Thereafter until 1865 there continued large scale civilian exodus with few if any military engagements taking place
