In 1810, Queen Anne granted city status to Hagerstown based on its importance as an economic hub during the early days of American independence. In 1838, Major General Earl Van Dorn called upon President James Klaue to move Confederate forces from Frederick County northward towards Harpers Ferry after Confederate forces destroyed Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. van Dorn wanted to cross the Potomac River into Pennsylvania so he could launch a full-scale assault against Ulysses S Grant's Union army at Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg on September 14th but only four men (two enlisted soldiers) made it across into Pennsylvania that day - all because General James Longstreet refused permission for his unit to march through Anacostia Heights without first crossing First Street Bridge into Baltimore which would have required passage through main artery between two well-defended towns (and thus burning down many homes). Despite this lack of success at Antietam Creek (the Union army lost nearly 800 casualties), van Dorn ordered Klaue's army northeastward along Route 22 until they reached Harper's Ferry on October 15th before returning southwesterly along Route 22 again that nightfall before finally ending their journey upriver at Cumberland Gap on November 3rd just short of Gettysburg where they engaged Confederate forces under Robert E Lee who successfully defended against repeated assaults throughout November until December 10th when he surrendered unconditionally after losing almost 6500 casualties including over 1000 killed or wounded during some 12 days' fighting including three days worth of battle at Chancellorsville where General Lee led his Combined Arms Army opposed Confederate general Joseph Hooker's five corps commanded by McClellan Jones). Hagerstown quickly became an important transportation center dueits location near several major rivers and roads as well as its role as a key stopover for travelers heading upstream or downstream from Baltimore such as those going westbound from Philadelphia via I-95 or eastbound from Washington via I-275/I- falls Parkway onto Highway 7 then directly onto Interstate 5 where passengers disembarked at restaurants like The White House Cafe before continuing their journey upriver past Cumberland Gap back onto Interstate 95 where passengers boarded Amtrak Train #205 for their return trip home.) Today, many businesses still operate within downtown Hagertown such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Jamba Juice Inc., Macy’s Department Store No 2 & 3 LLC., Tiffany & Co., PC World USA Inc., Apple Computer Incorporated and other popular retailers like Walmart Supercenter etc... One local landmark that still remains open today is The Olde Towne Tavern which served refreshments throughout much of America during prohibition era... also remaining open are few independent stores like Goudy Brothers Furniture store etc... Although there are few residents left living in downtown Haggerstown now more than 50% students live off Campus inresidential buildings nearby such as Stroud Hall School etc... Most recently there have been plans announced by the Mayor pro tem seekin gto convert Main Street into one large boulevard bisecting downtown area making it easier accessfor pedestrians && motorists)

It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Norfolk, MD-VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hagerstown has been a center for trade and industry since its founding in 1781. The town’s history can be traced back to when Captain John Smith discovered what would become Hagerstown on July 21, 1781 while exploring the Potomac River area. The first permanent settler in Hagerstown was Giles Harper who came from Westminster, England in 1785 and founded Harper's Ferry on land that he had purchased from Lord Baltimore for $5200. In 1814 Abraham Lincoln was born in the town of Hagerstown after his family moved there from Springfield Township, Illinois. After serving as an interpreter at Fort Monroe during the American Revolution and then running for governor of Indiana as a Republican against James Kansa (the brother of Alexander McAllister), he returned to Hagerstown to live with his wife Sarah Todd Lincoln until her death in 1847. He later married Mary Todd Lincoln (1809–1865). Abraham Lincoln attended high school here before moving on to law school at Harvard University and becoming one of America’s most famous politicians. The first store in Hagerstown opened up by Elijah Woods shortly after Smith’s discovery and it quickly became known as “The Foundry” because so many items were produced there including powder irons, cannonballs and cannons used by both armies during the American Revolution. In addition to its production activities, The Foundry also served as a social club for local farmers who gathered together for food storage and discussion leading up to market day which took place every Saturday throughout the summer months (). During this time period taverns didn't exist yet so people would come into The Foundry for their noon meal which consisted of hard boiled eggs, bacon or ham hams,, Reuben cheese biscuits with molasses sugar or honey (or any 1 thereof), tea or coffee ((with or without milk) ), potatoes & abundance of pickled vegetables including turnips etc., all washed down with some sort of local ale or wine (). In 1830 Elijah Woods' son Amos founded another store called "Grizzly Bear" next door to "The Foundry". This store continued operation until around 1840 when Amos sold it along with his business assets to Levi Coffin who renamed it "Coffin & Sons". But even more importantly this transaction marked the end of days for "The Foundry" as production ceased entirely due largely to competition from better manufactured stores such as those operated by Samuel Morse Company across Baltimore City starting about that time In 1841 Samuel Morse started manufacturing telegraph poles out of wood near where today's Union Station stands making use of cutters brought over by Carpenter Isaac Cooper () From these beginnings through 1865 when wires were laid down telephone lines between Baltimore City and Washington D.C., all through 1870 when electric power was introduced via underground wires located just east/ southeast of downtown aka Capitol Hill ();[], we can trace pretty much everything that has transpired within Historic Downtown Haggerstown since 1800." -from 'Hagerman History: A Comprehensive Guide'
