Hagerstown is bordered by Frederick to the north, Bowie to the east and south, and Annapolis to the west. The city was founded in 1814 by John C. Hager as an agricultural community on land that now includes much of downtown Hagerstown. After serving as a military outpost during World War II, Hagerstown became an important industrial center after large corporations moved into the area in the early 1960s. Today, Hagerstown has strong cultural ties with its neighboring cities of Bowie and Frederick and is home to both of Maryland's largest universities - Central College and Johns Hopkins University - as well as numerous businesses including Amazon Kindle Author House, National Football League (NFL) team Baltimore Ravens, Potomac Paper Mill and KFC restaurants.

The area that now makes up Hagerstown was first settled by German immigrants in 1764. In 1801, General James K. Polk made his headquarters here as part of his campaign for president on horseback from Fredericktown to Yorktown. On November 3, 1814, during the War of 1812, Confederate General Robert Ewing's brigade attacked and burned down what was then known as "Old Market Square" - this street today bears his name (Kensington Road). After the war ended in 1865, many Federal Soldiers returned home and started farms hereabouts including Major John Saylor who built Saylor's Mills along Kensington Road in 1876-77; Captain William Fenton who founded Fenton's Mill which still stands; Asa Gray who founded Gray's grocery store; John Wirtz who opened Wirtz Brothers grocery store; David Ladds who bottled water from springs nearby; and Charles Goodyear whose Tire & Rubber department operated out of a shed on Main Street until it closed shop in 1978. In 1927 King George V granted a charter to The Catholic University of America (CUA) at Hagerstown - one of only two private universities chartered by an reigning monarch in the United States at that time. CUA remains one of America’s most prestigious educational institutions with more than 4600 students enrolled across its campuses in Washington D.C., Baltimore and Annapolis/Washington International Airport – making it one of the largest higher education institutions outside Greater Boston or New York City! In 1961 CUPE Local 1167 formed to fight for better working conditions for local workers at nearby Harper Paper Company where IWW members helped break into company management after years OF non-payment of wages! Over time we've won improvements such as raises for our own officers & employees while never compromising our principles or defending ourselves against unionization efforts... eventually resulting in OUR Harpers being shuttered & replaced by another paper mill less environmentally friendly justoutside town! Some interesting milestones include: • On October 10th 1907 President Theodore Roosevelt delivered his keynote address “Our National Policy towards Mexico” which called for American entry into Mexican politics under a new policy championed by Assistant Secretary Edwin Mears Jr.. This led to US entry into World War II when Roosevelt authorized Admiral Harry Treadway to build USS Arizona off Point Defiance Bay so that he could bomb Mexico City! • On May 8th 1951 Rufus King became Governor when Anthony Rendon resigned due to illness and J[ohn] Buchanan succeeded him with Republican majorities both chambers having passed legislation authorizing King’s appointment—the first female governor west of Pennsylvania ! • On March 1st 1969 CUPE Local 2189 began picketing Freedom Industries over plans by management to close their operations permanently without warning locals or giving them any advance notice... eventually achieving key victory allowing jobs #1 through #5 (backpacker service), production #2 (& some light manufacturing), but no jobs#3 thru #7 which were elimination because they used too much energy !! • In 1984 local resident Cecil Bogan successfully campaigned against proposed consolidation within NorthernMaryland Telephone Co., Inc.—the biggest telephone monopoly then extant!--leading eventually to deregulationof phone services throughout Maryland & Delaware HOUSTON UPI PHOTOS OF MAYOR GORDON APPEALING TO CONVICT YOUNG MAN IN MURDERING HIS OWN DAUGHTER!!!
Hagerstown was first known as a small Indian settlement on the Potomac River. In 1747, General George Washington and his army invaded Virginia and burned Hagerstown to the ground. After the war, Hagerstown became an agricultural town with mills and warehouses. In 1814, Congress designated Hagerstown as the seat of the newly created District of Columbia. The town declined in popularity after this designation and slowly fell into disrepair until it was destroyed by fire in 1901.
