Hagerstown was founded on April 12, 1775 by General John Forbes and Colonel James Hardee as a logging community named for Sir Edmund Hager. It became one of the leading commercial and military centers in Northwest Maryland during the 19th century. In 1871, it became an incorporated town with a population of 33,000. The town declined in popularity after World War II until its revival during the late 1990s through downtown redevelopment and boulevard renovation projects. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Prince George's County via wagon train from England in 1772. They were led by Captain John Smith who landed at Cape Hatteras on December 11 that year with his men and supplies to establish Fort Caroline which served as the first permanent English settlement in North America east of New Jersey. On March 4, 1776, when war with France began, Captain Smith's fort fell to French forces under Pierre de La Fayette without a fight and British soldiers burned down the fortifications two days later while Smith and his men fled across Canada into Quebec City. Colonel James Hardee arrived at Fort Caroline on April 12 to take command of the garrison after Smith’s departure; he renamed it Hagerstown (a variant of *Hague*). A post office was established at Hagerstown on October 15, 1776; it remained open until 1800. In 1811 entrepreneur Thomas Handy built a flour mill near what is now south University Heights Boulevard; production increased rapidly thanks to hand-mill machinery imported from Great Britain two years earlier In 1819 he erected a three-story brick courthouse which still stands today next to Griggs Park southeast of downtown Hagerstown; this courthouse was used as an appellate court until 1865 when it became known as the Baltimore Court House In 1861 Confederate Major General Jubal Early attacked Harper's Ferry with 1,200 cavalrymen supported by 2 artillery pieces manned by Confederate officers seeking revenge for an earlier ambush that had killed several Union militiamen; 5 civilian hostages were taken including future Ulysses S Grant who lost an eye in this attack As part of Operation Crossroads early November 1861 American forces advanced northeastward across Maryland towards Washington D C along Antietam Creek Road bridge over Frederick River then turning northwest along Potomac River Road Bridge over Rappahannock River before reaching Federal lines north of Harrisonburg On November 13 General Robert E Lee surrendered his army at Appomattox Court House following five days of battle including heavy losses for both sides resulting in more than 100 dead including Generals Stonewall Jackson and Joseph E Lee Ridgefield Farm located west side Of present day Route 7 between Coopersville & Easton Twp where some Civil War era buildings remain
