At least twenty-one soldiers were killed and over fifty-six were wounded by Confederate gunfire. On July 8th 1861 Major General Ulysses S Grant ordered all artillerymen to retire within their batteries for fear that they might be destroyed if used against Confederate positions again. A total of 155 cannons were brought up to bear on Fort Sumter but only twelve men were killed or wounded by Confederate fire before it was withdrawn without firing any rounds. In 1865, when Hagerstown Rifle and Pistol Company merged with neighboring companies in order to form what is now known as First Sergeant's Firearms Co., it had an inventory worth $527 including eighty revolvers (all six shot).
Hagerstown is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 508 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Frederick, DC metropolitan area. Hagerstown was founded in 1814 and was incorporated as a city in 1917. The town grew up around the Hagerstown Arsenal on the Potomac River. The arsenal closed in 1913 and its equipment and products were sold to other companies. In 1978, parts of the arsenal were reopened as a artspace known as "The Arsenal." Today, it houses three museums: Hagerstown Museum of History & Industry; Hagerstown American Folklife Center; and The Armory Museum of Art. In 1814, General Robert Ewell established Fort Mifflin on land he had acquired near present-day Bowie Township in Prince George's County after his army destroyed a British fort at Harpers Ferry in what is now West Virginia during the War for Independence. Ewell named his new post for Major Francis Gary Haggerty who had fought with him at Harpers Ferry and been promoted to lieutenant colonel upon victory there over British forces led by Lieutenant Colonel John Armstrong Howe. In 1783, when President George Washington took office, he ordered surveyors to mark off 4⁄ 5ths of Northwest Maryland as part of the Louisiana Purchase from France. This included present day Prince George's County including much of what is now Hagerstown Township (except for areas that lay east of Fredericktown Road). On November 10, 1787, Washington issued an proclamation incorporating all present day Garrett County into Maryland as part of this purchase along with Cumberland County west thereof (including Baltimore City) but excluding Delaware Territory south thereof (the modern state of Delaware). Thereafter many settlers came to central Maryland through Garrett County looking for tracts of land which they could purchase or build homes on because none were available within their original boundaries1 2 In 1814 John Wade located 3 miles north-west corner lot on Main Street between Court Street & Centreville Road where he erected house called “Wade” still standing today 2 years later 3 Also James Fenton located 1 acre lots at corners Highways 2nd&3rd Streets about 20 rods from thence Washingtons Headquarters 4 By 1800 most people living in Garrett Co stayed there until well into next century
