Hagerstown, Maryland is a town in northern Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 25,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Northern Virginia suburbs. In 1781, Colonel John Hager founded Hagerstown after moving from his home in Dunmore Township, Pennsylvania. He became one of the first settlers of what would become Montgomery County and built a gristmill near present-day Mount Vernon. In 1814, President James K. Polk established Fort Hagerstown to protect Ulysses S. Grant's supplies as he marched through Montgomery County on his way to battle at Bull Run (1861). In 1875, General George McClellan's army attacked and successfully destroyed Fort Hagerstown during the Battle of Fredericksburg; this event helped spur development in nearby Potomac Falls and White Flint until World War II when Hagerstown lost its status as an infantry garrison town to Army barracks located in nearby Takoma Park. The post office at Hagerstown was established on February 14, 1847 by Alfred Chapman with the name "Anglesea", but it was changed to "Hagersford" on November 12 that year due to anti-clericalism sentiment following the American Revolution. The first postmaster was Mrinald Huffman who served from December 15th to May 5th, 1850; postmasters were Mrinald Huffman (July 1st 1865 - January 3rd 1870), John Egan (January 3rd 1870 - March 2nd 1872), Wm Lyon (March 2nd 1872 - October 4th 1880), Jaspar Hill (October 4th 1880 - May 8th 1888), Alfred Juhlmann (May 8th 1888 - October 15th 1890) and Philip Pfeffer (October 15th 1890 – July 16th 1893). It appears that there may have been more than one person serving as Postmaster for only six months or so before another individual took over for a total of eight years before finally being succeeded by someone else altogether. There are no records documenting who served as Postmaster for which date or even if they ever held that office for any extended period of time beyond their initial term which ranged from one month up to three years maximum! On September 9TH 1861 Ulysses S Grant ordered all flags be lowered from government buildings across America in order respect for Confederate Gen Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House less than two weeks later! This markedthe end of Reconstruction era in America where African Americans had enjoyed full civil rights under law since reconstruction began more than two decades earlier! This event also signified an end not just for military training purposes but also civilian infrastructure such as postal service which continued uninterrupted until 1948 when it became completely halted due to budget cuts within federally administered agencies like the Postal Service! This situation caused great inconvenience and frustration among citizens who were forced to rely on various private mail carriers until1993 when USPS implemented e‑mail delivery service! Today Hagerstown remains a small community with close knit relationships between its residents based upon common interests such as farming produce or giving rides back into town during local events like Fourth Of July fireworks displays or fallercolorfestivals

The first school was built here in 1798 and the first post office opened here on November 8th, 1801. The original courthouse was built here too but was destroyed by fire on December 14th, 1840. In 1861 Hagerstown became a separate county within Montgomery County and its name again changed to Hagerstown Township when that county was created. On April 12th 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant visited this community during his “March to Washington” campaign as part of his overall strategy for winning the Civil War. A monument trout pond has been erected near downtown Hagerstown dedicated to this occasion
Hagerstown is a town in Prince Georges County, Maryland, United States. The population was 10,826 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Hagerstown-Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent white settler in what is now Hagerstown was Isaac Harmon, who arrived in 1786 with his family from New York. He named his new land "Hagerstown." In 1814, John Crain formed a partnership with Nicholas Biddle to develop the land that would become Hagerstown; Crain became the first mayor of Hagerstown. In 1829, Benjamin Fenton purchased large parcels of land north of central Hagerstown and laid out streets and plazas which remain today as part of downtown Hagerstown. By 1830, most of what is now south downtown had been developed including many brick buildings that still stand today. In 1836, Nathaniel Lyon bought 1/2 mile (1 km) east of present day Main Street from George Stephenson for $5200. Lyon built a house on this tract which remains standing today and has been called the Start Building because it served as the starting point for streetcar lines running through downtown during its early days. Lyon also established a gristmill on this site which continues to function today as the Old Mill Museum & Restaurant
