Hagerstown is a city in Maryland, United States. The population was 63,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hagerstown County. The downtown area includes the old town hall and four other buildings from 1814. The first permanent settler in what is now Hagerstown was James Cuthbert in 1781. He built a cabin on the site of present-day Union Station while traveling through Virginia on his way to join General Washington in battle against British forces. In 1814, Hagerstown became part of Prince George's County when it was created from parts of Fairfax and Montgomery counties. In 1825, John Atherton founded what would become Baltimore & Ohio Railroad headquarters on Main Street in downtown Hagerstown (now known as Atherton Square). One year later, he sold his interest in the railroad to John Stephenson for $1 million ($ as of 2019). At that time, Baltimore & Ohio was one of the largest railroads in America with over 1,000 miles (1,600 km) of track across 13 states and Canada. John Stephenson also developed what are now called The Upper Town areas around Main and Market Streets between 1826 and 1830 as an upscale residential neighborhood for white wealthy men who could afford to live outside Philadelphia where social life revolved around balls and society events such as Charlotte Russe balls. This period has been generally referred to as "The Gilded Age" because of this development although some historians argue that "The Gilded Age" should be extended to include all periods during which economic inequality increased significantly within American society - from colonial times until today's epoch - due to technological advances alone! A large fire destroyed much of downtown Hagerstown at 5:00 P.M., November 10th 1863; damages were estimated at $250 thousand dollars ($ million as of 2019). Hagerstown is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 11,512 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Prince George's County. Hagerstown was founded in 1792 by Captain John Smith as a trading post on the Susquehanna River. The town was renamed Hagerstown in 1836 after General Robert E. Lee and his staff were injured at Gettysburg and moved to Hagerstown for medical care. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Prince George's County in 1792 when Captain John Smith arrived from England with his ship "John Adams". He named the area where he landed "Hagerstown" because of its high hills being close to where he had seen hogs graze during his travels through Pennsylvania and Delaware. In 1800, Colonel Nathaniel Greene erected a log cabin near present-day Uniontown while surveyor Benjamin Hawkins surveyed what would become Prince George's County. By 1836, all of present-day Prince George's County had been surveyed and development began at an accelerated pace due to developing transportation links via wagon roads (the Potomac Road) and railroads (the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad). In 1838, Major General James Longstreet decided that Fredericksburg should be the new capital of Virginia so he ordered Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Hooker to move 1,500 troops from Winchester to Fredericksburg on November 5th for defense against possible attack by rebels under Patrick Ferguson alias Alexander McClernand who had recently joined up with them. McNair advanced eastward downriver but encountered heavy resistance from local Virginia militia led by Brigadier General William Tecumseh Sherman which enabled Longstreet to withdraw with only 50 men wounded instead of the expected 100+ including Hooker himself! This episode has been some sources say called 'The Battle Of Fredericksburg' while others claim it was more like 'The Battle Of Sharpsburg'. Regardless, it illustrates how important it was for Generals Longstreet and Sherman to retreat quickly rather than fight a battle they knew they couldn't win! Hagerstown became an integral part of American culture due to its proximity to Washington D.C., which made it easy for people traveling there for business or pleasure to get involved in politics or government activity without havingto leave their homes! As such, many famous Americans such as Thomas Paine and Joshua Green lived hereabouts during their formative years; Paine becoming an outspoken patriot during the Revolutionary War while Green helped found The Paper Kites club which later became known as The Fivesome club! In fact, one can find numerous imprints from this period including newspapers such as The Grosse Pointe Democrat (1839–present), The Baltimore Sun (1840–present), Harpers Ferry Republican Gazette (1844–1911), Richmond Times Dispatch (1845–1920), Baltimore Evening Star (1848–1921) and many more! However, even after America’s independence from Great Britain in 1781 certain aspects of life continued unchanged: farmers continued growing crops using slave labor; businesses operated day and night; religion played an important role both locallyand nationally; social clubs/ societies flourished; children enjoyed plenty of school opportunities despite limited resources; etc… With this backdrop however comes increased attention paid towards issues like slavery – although not openly discussed – resulting in various rebellions throughout Maryland over that period culminating ultimately with Frederick Douglass escaping bondage back home in 1849! Inexplicably enough though given these events surrounding American Independence leading up until then things did not change much concerning racial representation within our society either... Although black Americans eventually achieved full political rights following Reconstruction following the Civil War they continue occupying various low-paying jobs across most facetsof American society primarily relegatedto AfricanAmerican neighborhoods/communities today!!!
