Hagerstown, Maryland is a small city located in the state of Maryland. The population was 27,531 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hagerstown County and covers an area of only 2 square miles (5 km²). The first Europeans to visit what is now Hagerstown were members of the Mayflower Compact Party in 1620. The town was founded by Captain John Smith on July 3, 1792 as a trading post on the Potomac River. On November 1, 1800, Hagerstown became part of Washington County when it was formed from parts of Prince George’s and Frederick counties. In 1846, Hagerstown was incorporated as a village and on December 5, 1850 it became a town. In 1907, Falls Church was established as an independent city within Washington County but fell within its borders after that year’s annexation by Hagerstown. On March 12, 1914, Falls Church passed an ordinance annexing all of what is now Montgomery County to become one municipality with a population of 100% black residents. This event helped spark three decades-long race riots in Baltimore which destroyed many white businesses and homes in downtown Baltimore while causing little damage to black neighborhoods throughout the city center. In 1972, Mayor Abe Beame announced plans for redevelopment including creating new jobs in downtown Hagerstown and developing several acres along Route 29 into industrial land that would be home to light manufacturing plants employing up to 1,000 workers over the next few years. However this plan met with opposition from many local citizens who saw their community decline while economic development took place elsewhere in the city center without their consent or participation. After Beame’s death in 1974 his successor William Gardner pushed for more aggressive development plans which included demolishing most old buildings and replacing them with high-rise apartments designed for professional athletes and other high-income residents rather than factory workers or low-income residents who depended on public services such as libraries and schools for their children He also proposed building stadiums for both football (the Colts) and baseball (the Orioles) teams inside Orchard District Park which would have eliminated any need for streetscape improvements necessary for these sports stadiums while giving off an appearance ofprogressiveness instead of traditional park enhancement strategies like tree removal or installation Of water Fountain features

Hagerstown is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 14,702 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Prince George's County. Hagerstown was first settled in 1718 by Germans who had come overland from Pennsylvania and were looking for a new home after being displaced by the British in the American Revolution. The town was named after General John Hager, an officer in the Continental army and commander of settlements along the Potomac River during the early days of this country. The first store in Hagerstown opened its doors on December 15, 1736. By 1824, there were ten stores and three taverns in town. In 1827, Hagerstown became one of three towns within Prince George's County to receive a charter from Governor James Ketchum. This act created a municipium status for Hagerstown that allowed it to enjoy certain privileges not enjoyed by other villages within the county such as free water supply and fire department contributions. In 1881, President James Buchanan designated Hagerstown as capital of Maryland due to its location between Washington D.C., which was then located north of Baltimore City limits and Annapolis Junction east of Fredericktown – two important points on interstate routes leading into central Maryland – and Baltimore City proper (then known as Queen Anne's County). In 1907-08, when much larger portions of southernPrinceGeorge'sCountywere annexed by newly formed Carroll County,[1]Haggerstown remained partofPrinceGeorge's COUNTYand continuedtoappearonofficialcounty mapsuntil1925whenitwasincorporatedintoCarrollCounty.(Itshouldnotbe confusedwiththe later incorporated community called Harfordville.) On November 3rd 1870 Charles Crain built "The Grange" which served as his headquarters while he represented Montgomery County in Congress from 1871-75; also lived here with his family until 1888 when they moved to Virginia Hill near Charlottesville Va.. A plaque at The Grange commemorates this period: "Herein began Charles Crain’s career as an legislator." From 1893-99 he served as Mayor of Harford City before moving back to Montgomery where he died on October 11th 1922 aged 91 years old . He is buried at Mount Airy Cemetery near Radnor Village MD .) Charles Wistar Webb (1847-1920) born in Shenandoah Valley PA married Elizabeth Jane Mason (1851-) on October 25th 1865; she died December 21st 1920 aged 83 years old; they had four children: Dr Emma Webb Wistar born February 1862(moved to Rockville md.), Marguerite Jane Webb born October 1865(moved to Bethesda md.), Everett Harry Webb born May 1870(moved to Rockville md.), and Winthrop Mott Webb born November 2nd 1872(moved back East Coast USA)). Mrs Webbs maiden name was Livingstone after her late husbands mother who died whilst pregnant with them
